The exciting year at the movies was certainly due to some great performances. Many actors gave great performances multiple times, in fact, and some got to try their hand at a mix of comedy, drama, romances, and you name it. So who were we seeing all the time? James Franco probably gets the award for most appearances, but other actors like Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams felt like they were everywhere too. Keep reading to see the stars all over the screen in 2013.
Ryan Gosling starred in a few movies this year, like the follow-up to the hit Drive: the ultraviolent Only God Forgives.
But he was on the other side of the law as a stunt motorcycle rider who turns to a life of crime to support his son in The Place Beyond the Pines.
The Place Beyond the Pines also starred another ubiquitous 2013 actor: Bradley Cooper.
American Hustle also features Amy Adams, a lady who showed up in a few films herself this year.
Benedict Cumberbatch had a huge 2013, popping up as Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate, for one.
And he was part of a huge ensemble in August: Osage County.
He stood out as infamous villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness and memorably provided his voice for another villain: the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Cumberbatch also showed up with a small role in award magnet 12 Years a Slave.
Melissa McCarthy was the comedy queen in 2013, kicking off the year in Identity Thief.
But it's possible she got the most laughs as foulmouthed Detective Mullins in The Heat.
One of 2013's busiest actors? Mark Wahlberg, who started the year in the thriller Broken City.
Wahlberg also flexed his dramatic muscle in true-life tale Lone Survivor.
Don't worry, Wahlberg was also flexing his real muscles in movies like 2 Guns — which is not about his arms, the undisputed star of Pain & Gain.
Pain & Gain also showcased the muscular talents of Dwayne Johnson, who was cookin' a lot in 2013 as well.
His action star status was also on display in movies like Snitch and Fast & Furious 6, the latter of which saw him reprising his role in the franchise.
Speaking of franchises, The Rock also got into more action with G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Johnson's G.I. Joe: Retaliation costar Channing Tatum also made it his beeswax to be everywhere in 2013.
But he showed off his range in nonaction movies like Side Effects. Other places we were surprised to see him this year? Making hilarious cameos in This Is the End and Don Jon.
The ever-busy James Franco popped up in lots of different movies in lots of different genres, and Oz the Great and Powerful was his big studio family film.
He was all over the place, like as Hugh Hefner in Lovelace and as a scary redneck in Homefront, and he appeared in films he directed (As I Lay Dying, Interior. Leather Bar.) and wrote the foundation material for (Palo Alto).
Of course, his most memorable role has to be as Alien, the grilled-out Florida rapper in Spring Breakers.
Funny girl Rose Byrne showed up in a few places, like in The Internship, as a Google exec.
And she rounded out her 2013 as a romantic leading lady in I Give It a Year.
Paul Rudd made a few comedies himself in 2013, like Admission, in which he's the love interest to Tina Fey.
He also teamed up with Emile Hirsch for indie comedy Prince Avalanche.
We may have been happiest to see him back in Brian Fantana's mustache for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
Likewise, Steve Carell also came back for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, one of his many 2013 movie roles.
Carell was a little less charming as Toni Collette's jerk boyfriend in The Way Way Back.
He had some magic (at least in his hair) for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
Olivia Wilde also got to make some magic as the assistant of Carell's character in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
Wilde threw some back as a co-worker and good friend of Jake Johnson's character in the indie Drinking Buddies.
And she played blushing bride to Chris Hemsworth's race-car driver in Rush, as well as a potential date in Her.
