Daenerys and Her Dragons: A Love Story

Game of Thrones' Daenerys Targaryen is many things: the fiercest badass in the Seven Kingdoms and workout spirit animal, but her most important role of all? Mother of Dragons. Over the course of six seasons, Daenerys has mothered her three babies from their humble beginnings as petrified eggs to full-grown, ferocious dragons. It's been a long journey, especially for her and Drogon, her favorite. Take a look below to see why these are more than just dragons to Daenerys — they're her children.

Daenerys and Her Dragons: A Love Story

When we first meet the dragons, they're inside gigantic petrified eggs.

Daenerys keeps close watch over them, unsure if they'll ever hatch.

They do, and it's epic.

Daenerys grows to embrace the babies, who she names Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.

She carries them around, like a good mother would.

She keeps them chained, for their own safety.

And she basically makes all the ladies in the land jelly with her awesome babies.

She even has a special travel tote for them, because she's cool like that.

Advisors warn her of the dangers of having dragons, but she stays firm.

Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion remain at her side, warding off enemies.

She takes them for walks, as you do with toddlers.

Drogon, in particular, is not a fan of the leash.

And sometimes, she just has to let them fly on their own.

But they always come back to their mom.

When Daenerys begins her takeover, Drogan is right beside her.

As are Rhaegal and Viserion, because they love their mommy too.

They can get a little rowdy, but Daenerys remains unruffled.

She knows that with great power, comes great responsibility.

As children tend to do, the dragons grow and grow.

And Daenerys realizes they have a wild side that even she can't control.

No matter how close they are.

The dragons can never be tamed . . . because, well, they're dragons.

After they torch a small child, Daenerys is forced to make a tough decision.

She shackles Rhaegal and Viserion underground, where they can't hurt anyone.

It's f*cking heartbreaking.

Drogon, who is missing when Daenerys chains his brothers, returns triumphantly.

He senses his mother is in danger, and protects her . . . savagely.

He unleashes his full wrath out on Daenerys's attackers.

Daenerys looks horrified but also, dare we say, proud?

They have a moment together, and for a second, everything is right with the world.

For the first time, Daenerys climbs on Drogon's back and takes off.
