If you haven't seen Paper Towns and you care about spoilers, now would be a great time to turn around. As for the rest of you, we need to talk about that epic cameo in the very John Hughes-inspired film. As you probably know, Paper Towns comes from writer John Green, the same author who penned The Fault in Our Stars, the movie that made you weep a thousand tears over a fateful romance between cancer-stricken teenagers. That movie even has the star of Paper Towns, Nat Wolff, in it. But that's where the casting overlap stops . . . right? That's what we thought, until we saw the movie and lo and behold, guess who shows up?
That's right, Gus! He unexpectedly turns up as a gas station attendant named Mason. He's sporting a dragon tattoo, and he says, "Do you like dragons?" Yes, yes we do.
Director Jake Schreier told MTV News that the idea of a cameo came about at either The Fault in Our Stars premiere or the MTV Movie Awards. "There aren't a lot of other characters in the film," he said. "Our options were limited. It was basically that or he could have been a check-out guy. I mean, I guess he could have played Gus [the Sun Trust building guard], but that could have been a little weird — you know, just the name's the same."
