The Trailer For Turn Up Charlie Gives Us Our First Look at Idris Elba as a "Manny"

After getting a taste of comedic success with his semiautobiographical Sky Atlantic show, In the Long Run, Idris Elba has clearly got the bug. The talented actor and all-around smooth operator has now teamed up with Netflix for eight episodes of Turn Up Charlie, a new 30-minute original comedy. People's Sexiest Man Alive portrays the titular character, a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor who becomes a "manny" to his best friend's problem-child. Check out all the glorious details ahead before the show premieres on Netflix on March 15!

01

The Star

Idris Elba not only takes the lead in the Netflix UK original comedy series, but he'll also serve as cocreator and one of the executive producers.

02

The Plot

Elba's Charlie is a struggling DJ who ends up taking a job as a nanny for his famous friend's 11-year-old daughter, who is described as being known for her "spiky retorts, mischievous adventures, and epic tantrums." Given how good Elba is at telling bedtime stories, we have a feeling he'll charm her in the end.

03

The Cast

Coyote Ugly's Piper Perabo will appear as Elba's costar. Perabo will play Sara, "a superstar DJ, feminist icon, and vivacious trendsetter," whose daughter, Gabrielle, is who Elba's character ends up watching. Gabrielle will be played by newcomer Frankie Hervey.

04

Sara's husband and Gabrielle's father, David, is played by Turn star JJ Feild, whose character is described as a "charming and charismatic Hollywood actor."

The Filming Location

Production began in early June in London. Elba's previous TV show In the Long Run was set in Hackney, where Elba himself grew up. This show is not autobiographical in the same way that one was, but no doubt some elements of his own life in London will make their way into the show. The character of David is described as being "a North London boy done good," so it's likely most of the action will take place north of the river.

06

The Air Date

Turn Up Charlie will premiere on Netflix on Friday, March 15.
