The hot 2012 bestseller Where'd You Go, Bernadette is officially moving forward after it was announced that Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater may direct the adaptation. The book, written by Maria Semple, has a rich group of characters: there's the titular Bernadette, a middle-aged wife and mother who goes missing after a suburban scandal; her Microsoft-serving husband, Elgin; and her precocious teen daughter, Bee. Since no casting has been announced yet, we're playing casting director with some ideas for who could play each main character. Do you agree with any of our picks?
Bernadette isn't terribly far off from Blanchett's Blue Jasmine character, one of her best roles ever.
She's a master at complicated, emotional women; she could nail playing a brilliant mom who once had it all.
Throw some big, dark glasses on Kidman, and you have the book's glam, paranoid protagonist.
Famous for playing one of TV's best mothers ever, we'd love to see her play the bright architect.
Obviously Weisz would have Bernadette's glam tendencies down, and the seasoned actress could nail her other personality traits, too.
Fey hasn't done much drama, but Bernadette needs to be played with humor to get the right tone.
She plays an unhinged mom on Bates Motel, so she could channel a different kind of eccentricity as Bernadette.
Shields could totally pull off Bernadette's signature look of big glasses and scarves.
The Oscar winner could be perfect for the architect-turned-stay-at-home-mom.
The actress, who has a lot of indies under her belt, could be a great pick for the Seattle-hating wife and mother.
The Modern Family dad could easily play the brilliant, sometimes shortsighted Microsoft employee.
Wouldn't a bearded Hamm, bundled up in a cozy jacket, make a perfect Seattle dad?
There's a reason Carell plays so many dads — he's so good at it. He'd be great for the warm, if not frequently misguided, Elgin.
Ruffalo has played many a cute dad, and he could do so again as Bee's father.
It's a bit outside of the box, but we could totally see Stewart delivering Elgin's groundbreaking TED talk.
The good-looking actor could bring some of that handsomeness to Elgin, a father and scientist.
The 15-year-old, who has starred on Once Upon a Time, could be a great Bee, the young girl following the mystery of her mother's disappearance.
At 14, Foy is close in age to Bee (who's 15 in the book), and she shares her diminutive size.
The Mad Men actress has proved that she can play precocious, which is exactly what Bee is.
The Girl Meets World actress has proved she can play a witty, warm, and charming character, like Bee.
The Jessie star is poised to break out, and she could do so in this hot adaptation.
