Just call it The Middleton Effect. Modest, midi and to-the-knee lengths have become the preferred hemline of red carpet all stars. While on her tour of Australia and New Zealand, Kate Middleton has been showing off her new royal wardrobe of skirts and dresses with lower hemlines. Meanwhile, during press events for movies and television shows like Mad Men, Noah, and The Amazing Spider-Man, we've noted a similarly demure theme.

Of course, in this chicken-or-egg scenario, we know that the clothes came before the appearance, but we didn't anticipate pencil skirts and a-line midis would catch on among celebrities the way they have with the fashion set. Thanks in large part to Jennifer Lawrence's deal with Dior, the relationships between celebrities and high fashion designers have become more trend-forward than ever. Gutsy ensembles have seemingly all but replaced "safe" choices on virtually every red carpet, save for The Oscars. And we like it.
