Rodarte Recreated Josie's Prom Dress From Never Been Kissed, and It's Sublime

After sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the duo behind Rodarte, took a two-year break from New York Fashion Week, they returned to the runway with the colorful, whimsical dresses they're known for. Multi-layer lace, striped crochet midis, ruffles, and tulle were in abundance — all qualities of red carpet creations we're bound to see on the likes of Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst. But a certain '80s aesthetic was palpable, with strong shoulders coming through and a couple of lamé gowns made to flash, not shine.

One stuck out like a sore thumb: this magenta design that immediately reminded us of Josie Geller's prom dress in Never Been Kissed, circa 1999. While you might recall that Josie got stood up wearing her high-shine look with poufy sleeves, we have to wonder if there's something about this nostalgic style that will resonate with women today, who don't really care about fitting in when it comes to fashion and self-expression.

Lately, our clear reach for outfits from decades past knows no limits. Whatever you like — whether it's from the '70s, '80s, '90s, you name it — is frankly just cool, even if it is maybe a little over-the-top. So listen to Rob, Josie. Your prom dress rocks, and you're not "Josie Grossie" anymore.
