Today, cities around the country are honoring civil-rights icon Rosa Parks in a beautiful way. Dec. 1 marks the anniversary of the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a racially segregated bus back in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama. Parks's subsequent arrest for her brave act prompted the Montgomery bus boycott, and eventually led to segregated bus laws being ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

GRTC Transit buses in Richmond, VA honored the late activist by marking the first passenger seat on each bus off limits. The buses will also remain lit up throughout the day to honor Rosa Park's light, along with all vehicles featuring a special message about Rosa on its electronic headers.

The Department of Transportation at the University of Maryland announced it would honor Rosa by leaving a seat available on all university buses. "Today is Rosa Parks Day! We'll be honoring her act of civil disobedience by saving a seat for her on each of our @Shuttle_UM buses," the department wrote on their official Twitter.

We couldn't think of a better way to honor Rosa Parks for all of her contributions to the civil rights movement. A national treasure, indeed.
