Get Excited! Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Solo Movie Might be an "R-Rated Girl Gang Film"

May 9 2018 - 3:20pm

Back in November, Margot Robbie sat down to chat with MTV News [1] and confirmed that a Harley Quinn standalone movie is in the works. When asked if there was any word on the character's imminent return to the big screen — her first appearance was that sinister-but-sweet turn in 2016's antihero manifesto, Suicide Squad [2] — the actress said that yes, a Harley-centric spinoff will definitely make its way to theaters, but it might take some time. "I've been working on a separate spinoff Harley thing for a while now," she said. She also teased that she'd been involved in the project for two years. Two years!

When it comes to a potential Suicide Squad spinoff, there seems to be quite a bit of confusion. After all, DC Comics first announced a Gotham City Sirens [3] film that would incorporate other evil femme fatales from the gritty Gotham universe. That project was later shifted into a Harley Quinn and Joker standalone [4]. Could this be what Robbie was talking about? Nope! When the other films are brought up, Robbie quickly clarified, "It's a totally different one!"

Now it seems that the solo outing for Harley Quinn might have found the perfect director. Cathy Yan, who earned plenty of buzz for her dark comedy Dead Pigs at Sundance, is in talks to direct [5], according to The Hollywood Reporter. If Yan is hired, she'd be the first Asian woman to direct a superhero movie of this magnitude, and the third female director chosen to helm a major DC project at Warner Bros., following Patty Jenkins's Wonder Woman [6] (and its sequel [7]) and Ava DuVernay [8]'s upcoming New Gods. As far as story goes, the Warner Bros. film is reportedly based on the Birds of Prey property, which follows an all-female crew of heroes and villains, like Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Katana.

While speaking to Collider in May, Robbie explained why she believes a solo Harley Quinn movie should not happen without a squad [9]. "I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends.' Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film," she told the outlet. "She's got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."

So, there you have it. We may be getting a Joker and Harley movie, but it seems like a Harley Quinn solo movie is also happening. As for more details pertaining to any of the projects floating around out there, it seems like it's only a matter of time.
