That creepy live-action Flounder [1] puppet? Auli'i Cravalho's powerful voice? Shaggy's red leather ensemble? Thirst for Prince Eric? All was involved on Tuesday night when ABC aired its live production [2] of The Little Mermaid [3]. The event — held in honor of the original film's 30th anniversary — was a mix of footage from Disney's animated classic, as well as live performances of the movie's best songs.
While certain performances knocked it out of the park — Amber Riley's "Triton's Daughters" and Queen Latifah's "Poor Unfortunate Souls" [4] were highlights — other moments (and notes [5]) fell a little bit flat. Ahead, see what devoted Disney fans thought of The Little Mermaid Live, and then check out what you need to know about the upcoming big screen adaptation [6].
First of all, everyone was HERE for Amber Riley's role as a new character named Emcee.
And then there was some Prince Eric-related thirst, obviously.
Auli'i Cravalho's performance of "Part of Your World" hit everyone with a wave of nostalgia.
That terrifying Flounder puppet? NOPE!!!
Unsurprisingly, Shaggy's red leather costume got some attention . . .
Queen Latifah had basically everyone sign a deal with Ursula during her spectacular performance.
OK, yes, we all have some questions about John Stamos . . .
Of course there *were* some critiques of the show.
But overall? It seems like Disney fans were feeling it.
