The 25 Stars Who Belong in the Best Gowns We Saw on the Runway

Jan 4 2018 - 9:00am

We're going to tell you one of our favorite pastimes during Fashion Week [1]: choosing gowns we'd like to see on the red carpet. What's even more exciting is designating certain looks for very specific celebrities. Actresses like Jennifer Lawrence [2] and Millie Bobby Brown have contracts with Dior and Calvin Klein, respectively, so you can be sure they're shopping those Spring 2018 runways for award season [3] looks.

But we also have a whole wish list of pairings we dream about. Nicole Kidman [4], for example, has worn Alexander McQueen [5] only a number of times, but how fabulous would a moment in this pink appliquéd dress be for her? Read on to catch up on all our predictions for future Hollywood events, and let us know if you agree with our matches.

Louis Vuitton

Alicia Vikander

The actress is one of the many faces of the brand [7], and we'd love to see her slip into a slightly edgier gown.

Alicia wore Louis Vuitton [8] to the Golden Globes in 2016.

Chanel

Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger [9] has worn Chanel gowns plenty of times for red carpet events, and we think she's more than capable of transforming into the Spring 2018 "pink Chanel bride." [10]

Diane wore Chanel to the Elle Style Awards in 2015.

Alexander McQueen

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman [11] is a red carpet chameleon [12], having admitted that she likes to switch up her style on the red carpet. We think she looks beyond fabulous in an over-the-top McQueen design, like this caped dress she wore to the 2016 Met Gala [13].

Elie Saab

Jessica Biel

A ladylike but sophisticated Elie Saab dress that's a touch sexy thanks to a slit or sheer details is right up Jessica Biel [14]'s alley. We think she could take on the golden shade easily.

Jessica wore Elie Saab [15] to the Golden Globes in 2017.

Giambattista Valli

Amal Clooney

Amal wore Giambattista Valli during her wedding weekend [16] in 2014. She goes for high-low silhouettes and florals at red carpet events, and we love the unexpected touch of lace on the bodice of our chosen design.

Amal wore Giambattista Valli [17] to the Hail, Caesar! premiere in 2016.

Miu Miu

Elle Fanning

Elle is a Miu Miu queen [18]. The actress looks gorgeous in everything from custom gowns to glittery white cocktail designs from the fashion house.

Elle wore Miu Miu [19] to the 2017 Met Gala.

Givenchy

Lily Collins

Lily sat front row at the Spring 2018 Givenchy show, which leads us to believe she's about to show up in a lot of the label's transformed dresses. We love seeing Lily in lace, however edgy it may be.

Lily wore Givenchy to the brand's Spring 2018 show in October 2017.

Dior

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer has worn a tremendous amount of princess-like ballgowns from Dior. She's the face of the French fashion house, giving her every opportunity to try out a wide range of looks. We would love to see her slip into something metallic and daring.

Jennifer wore this sheer Dior gown [20] to the LA premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in 2013.

Saint Laurent

Cara Delevingne

Cara outshines the rest in everything from '80s-style minidresses to sophisticated suits. We think she could even pull off the Yeti boots [21] from the runway.

Cara wore Saint Laurent to the New York premiere of Paper Towns in 2015.

Balmain

Jane Fonda

We've got to hand it to Jane Fonda: she pulls off Balmain looks we never even thought possible. We could easily see her slipping into a cobalt top and sequined pants for the red carpet.

Jane wore Balmain [22] to the Grammys in 2015.

Céline

Tilda Swinton

Who better to pull off an avant-garde dress than Tilda? We can't wait to see a celebrity slip into the drop-waist fringed dress that debuted on the Spring '18 runway, and Tilda could easily be up for the task.

Tilda wore Céline to the Time 100 Gala in 2012.

Altuzarra

Emily Ratajkowski

The star looks phenomenal in a slit dress, as she proved here at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2015. We would love to see her in a really glamorous, completely golden piece.

Ralph & Russo

Rihanna

Even in all black, Rihanna [23] is the belle of the ball. But she's totally game to try on a voluminous, eye-catching outfit that seems a little artsy too.

Rihanna wore Ralph & Russo to unveil her Chopard collection at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Versace

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie [24] has worn slinky Versace dresses for so many red carpets, and we love how the tribute to Gianni Versace at the Spring 2018 show [25] brought back so many of his retro silhouettes. We think the actress and activist could easily pull off mint green for an event.

Angelina wore Atelier Versace for the Golden Globe Awards in 2012.

Gucci

Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson [26] is a Gucci muse, having been one of the many celebrities who showed up to the 2016 Met Gala [27] in creations by Alessandro Michele. The star-speckled pink gown with pleating has her name all over it.

Erdem

Keira Knightley

Keira wears Erdem quite often [28], and the fashion house actually tends to put pockets on the dresses she selects. We think she can pull off a cool blue color palette easily.

Keira wore Erdem to the Hollywood premiere of Anna Karenina in 2012.

Brandon Maxwell

Lady Gaga

Brandon Maxwell went from Lady Gaga [29]'s stylist to a full-fledged designer armed with plenty of clients like Oprah and Michelle Obama [30]. If he designed a look that's really over-the-top, our bets are on Gaga to bring it to life.

Lady Gaga wore Brandon Maxwell at the 2016 Oscars.

Oscar de la Renta

Sarah Jessica Parker

The actress famously wore this gown to the 2014 Met Gala, which was embroidered with the designer's name and eventually inspired later designs [31]. Imagine if she delighted in a Carrie Bradshaw moment by paying homage to her character's tutu look.

Oscar de la Renta

Emma Stone

Emma Stone [32] has worn Oscar de la Renta for daytime events, and this sequined, two-toned fit-and-flare would flatter her figure in every way possible.

Emma wore Oscar de la Renta at the Irrational Man photo call during the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Rodarte

Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten will be wearing a Rodarte wedding dress [33] at her nuptials to Fargo costar Jesse Plemmons, and she's been slipping into the label's ethereal gowns to promote her new film Woodshock with the Mulleavy sisters. We think that even in black, she'd stand out in this look from the runway.

Kirsten wore Rodarte at the Woodshock premiere in Hollywood in September 2017.

Carolina Herrera

Kate Bosworth

Kate Bosworth [34] loves a good Carolina Herrera number, and she routinely sits front row at the brand's shows during Fashion Week. The actress looks stunning in all things glitzy and pink.

Kate wore Carolina Herrera for the label's fashion show in February 2016.

Jonathan Simkhai

Gigi Hadid

Gigi wears Jonathan Simkhai for red carpet events, but she slips into the label's more casual pieces on the street too. We think this mixed-material peach gown, however, belongs on the red carpet.

Gigi wore Jonathan Simkhai for a dinner honoring Anna Wintour in June 2017.

Brock Collection

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie joined the Brock Collection squad when she wore this stunning white pouf-sleeved gown to the world premiere of Goodbye Christopher Robin in 2017. We can imagine a similar romantic look that we spotted on the Spring 2018 runway that comes complete with an overlay.

Calvin Klein

Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown is officially a Calvin Klein girl [35], and her spunky attitude means she'll try any type of dress, from teacup designs made from tulle to colorful fringed looks.

Millie wore Calvin Klein by Appointment [36] to the 2017 Emmy Awards.

Christian Siriano

Danielle Brooks

Christian Siriano always sends stunning, colorful designs with unexpected details down his runway. But what we also love about him is that he dresses women of all body types. He's created so many custom outfits for Orange Is the New Black [37] star Danielle Brooks, and we imagine she'd look totally cool and sophisticated in this turquoise jumpsuit.

Danielle wore Christian Siriano to the 2015 Emmy Awards.
