The Best Summer Wedding Flowers

Jul 9 2016 - 5:20am

Balmy weather, long days, and green landscapes are a few of the reasons why Summer is the most popular time of year to get married. Unfortunately, for Summer brides, not all blossoms are created equal when it comes to standing up against the strong Summer sun. To avoid standing at the altar with a wilted bouquet, keep reading to find out exactly which flowers are best for Summer weddings. We have the inside scoop straight from Callie Bladow, production director at renowned national flower delivery company Bloom That [1]. Keep reading to learn what Callie has to say.

Garden Roses

Roses are possibly the best-known and most beloved flower in the world, but despite the flower's popularity, few people are familiar with the garden varietals, which not only ooze old-fashioned beauty but are hearty to boot. Callie recommends exploring garden rose options like the breathtaking Romantic Antique and timeless Juliet rose. "These lovely blooms peak in the summer and hold up well in the heat making them perfect for summer weddings," she says. "Roses (for the most part) will also keep their posture and stay beautiful all day."

Dahlias

"Dahlias are a great bloom for special events because they are stunning, in-season, and aren't available year-round," Callie says. Great news for Summer brides! As for which type to go for, she advises ball dahlias for daytime Summer weddings where the heat factor is high because they hold up the best. "'Dinner plate' and 'cafe au lait' dahlias are stunning in size and texture, but unfortunately they don't love the heat, so they’re ideal for cooler evening events or indoor ceremonies."

Calla and Asiatic Lillies

"These large, fragrant blooms hold up well in the heat and will also keep their posture and stay beautiful while being transferred in and out of water, making them perfect for bridesmaids' bouquets or table settings," says Callie.

Peonies

Good news for those getting wed in early Summer: "Peonies have their peak bloom time during the summer, though are only available from mid-May to early July," Callie says. "Peonies also hold up well in the heat, making them a great day wedding option. If you select peonies that start in the ball form at the beginning of the event, they will continue to open throughout the ceremony and reception."

Proteas

Depending on your wedding theme and setting, a less traditional flower might make an awe-inspiring addition to your bouquet. "Any flower of the Protea variety will do well in the sunshine, and last all day and night." Callie is especially fond of Blushing Bride, Pink Ice, Compacta, and King proteas.

Fillers

Don't forget about the fillers that highlight and frame the blossoms. As with flowers, certain types are better suited for summer weddings than others. "Greenery – especially ferns, eucalyptus, explosion grass, geranium, and silver Lamb's Ear – and succulents hold up really well in the heat," advises Callie. "Adding summer fruits, such as kumquats or flowering artichokes, to the mix gives a unique aspect and keeps the arrangement looking fresh."

Other Summer Favorites

Want even more options? Callie says astilbe, veronica, freesia, lisianthus, dubium, staked succulents, and Queen Anne's lace are all great additional flower options for Summer weddings.
