As the Democratic and Republican conventions approach, here's a tally of where the remaining candidates stand in delegate count. Republicans have 16 contests left until June, while Democrats have 20.
Republicans need 1,237 delegates to win the nomination.
- Donald Trump [1] has 743.
- Ted Cruz has 545.
- John Kasich has 143.
Democrats need 2,383 to win the nomination.
- Hillary Clinton has 1,289.
- Bernie Sanders has 1,038.
- These numbers do not include superdelegates, which can change their minds [2]. Clinton has 468 superdelegates, while Sanders has 31.
Cruz has gained enough steam to possibly force a contested Republican convention [3] if Trump doesn't get enough delegates, while Sanders needs to win more than 57 percent of the votes going forward [4] in order to knock Hillary Clinton out of the frontrunner position.
Numbers come from the Associated Press [5] and were last updated here April 13.
