SNL's "God Is a Boob Man" Skit Makes Fun of Antigay Laws

"I want to deny basic goods and services to gay people" isn't usually the sort of inspirational speech set to "Fight Song" [1], but there's a first time for everything. In this Saturday Night Live skit called "God Is a Boob Man" — a parody of faith-based drama film series God's Not Dead [2] — Vanessa Bayer plays a baker named Bethany who refuses to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple.

Lampooning Mississippi's recent antigay law [3] and satirically stating that "Christians are the most oppressed group in this country," the faux-trailer proudly claims the same production company as Angel in Denim: The Kim Davis Story, a reference to the infamous country clerk who refused to issue gay marriage licenses [4].

Unsurprisingly, SNL's sketch has received quite a bit of flack [5] from religious and right-wing media, but it has also received an overwhelmingly positive response on Reddit [6] and across social media.

We crazy, liberal, sinful, progressive Mississippians know to laugh to keep from crying. That's why there's SNL. https://t.co/rBtC9PLrpB [7]
