Donatella Versace described her Spring 2013 collection as "subtle" — and hers is probably the only fashion house where metallic fringe laid over a gold minidress and belted at the waist qualifies as such.

When you step back a bit, though, this collection is noticeably pared down compared to what we've seen from Versace over the past few seasons. The prints are the first clue to that: save for two garments that feature the house's iconic medusa image as a motif, many of the other fabrics are gentle splotches or stripes of one color imposed over another. There are also a few dresses bedecked with metal studs and some tied together corset-style across diagonal slashes in the material. A few dresses featured lace embellishments and insets, and loose-cut, simple black jackets (yes, jackets) were certainly very subtle. But in this collection, they were among the standout pieces.

Donatella Versace is known for her sexy, body-con styles, and her Spring '13 showing was just that, but perhaps with a more subtle touch than what we're used to seeing from the designer. The show opened with easy lace-appliqued minidresses paired with low-slung studded belts. The same technique was seen on a range of crop tops and hot shorts worn with sleek blazers and leather jackets. The most wearable, everyday pieces came from an assortment of skinny striped, dip-dyed, and lace-adorned pants paired with billowy crushed silk tops, emoting a decidedly '70s bohemian vibe. Catering to the red carpet, a brigade of color — orange, teal, pink — entered the runway, highlighting seductive high-slit gowns (Jennifer Lopez, anyone?) and short embellished minidresses made for leg-baring starlets like Lea Michele and Selena Gomez.

  • Trends: '70s, billowy sleeves, leather, lace.
  • Colors: Black gold, orange, teal, blue, pink.
  • Key Piece: We loved the lace-embellished pants.
  • Accessories: Sandal boots, strappy metallic sandals, statement sunglasses, studded belts, exotic crossbody bags, leather clutches.
  • Who Should Wear It: We can picture the sexy high-slit gowns on red-carpet stunners like Jennifer Lopez and Lea Michele, along with front-row attendees Milla Jovovich and Jessica Stam.

Atelier Versace Fall 2012

Atelier Versace Couture Fall 2012 Collection

There was no shortage of glitz at Atelier Versace's Fall 2012 show on Monday, the first full-on runway outing for the couture label in nearly a decade. In fact, Donatella seemed intent on summoning the flamboyant spirit of the label's founder, Gianni. The show was held in the storied pool room of the Ritz Paris — the same place Gianni used to hold his show — with the pool covered over and three sleek glass panels providing an electric-hued backdrop.

The theme, the show notes stated, was "deconstruction and reconstruction in all its various forms." This manifested itself in the perforated-leather jackets, plasticized-strip minidresses, and pieced-and-stitched gowns — with slits up to there — that came down the runway glittering with crystal beads and in pastel metallics. Silhouettes, too, played with the idea of juxtaposition and revision, in skin-revealing layers and curve-enhancing forms: the skirts of gowns billowed out from second-skin corsets, and sharp-flared jackets nipped in at the waist with tough leather belts.

Versace Couture Fall 2012

With front row attendees like Jessica Alba, Elizabeth Banks, and Lea Michele, it's safe to say the line to nab a piece of Donatella Versace's Fall '12 Couture collection for the next red carpet appearance will be a lengthy affair.

With front row attendees like Jessica Alba, Elizabeth Banks, and Lea Michele, it's safe to say the line to nab a piece of Donatella Versace's Fall '12 Couture collection for the next red carpet appearance will be a lengthy affair. The show — held at the prestigious Ritz Paris where her brother Gianni Versace showed his couture shows for many years before his death — turned up the volume on what the Italian fashion house does best: jaw-dropping minidresses and gowns. The collection was filled with Versace's signature glamour and glitz as a rainbow of pastel hued looks made their way down the runway. If the sheer corset dresses and scarf print minis weren't enough, Donatella's penchant for over-the-top decadence was proven in her flourish of studded wide belts, strappy high heel pumps, statement cocktail rings. Look closely and you can see all intricate fabric techniques she utilized like weaving patent leather together into a leather jacket, creating delicate sheer cutouts, and our favorite, a glittery mesh detail we're dying to get our hands on. More details from the collection below, then check out the complete collection.

  • Trends: High slits, sheer cutouts, metallics
  • Colors: Yellow, green, pink, purple, gold, light blue.
  • Key piece: The diaphanous printed gowns with high slits are perfect for a red carpet event.
  • Accessories: Strappy pumps, wide embellished belts, and statement rings
  • Who would wear it: Girls who want to turn heads like Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Selena Gomez.

Versace Resort 2013 Collection

Donatella Versace called her Resort 2013 collection "rockmantic," and with all the studded leather pieces and floral prints it contains, it's an appropriate distinction. The offering was partially influenced by the Memphis design movement of the 1980s, which explains why many pieces were brightly colored — and why the print featured on jackets, pants, and dresses juxtaposed images of guitars with flowers and shoes. As is her custom, Versace nodded to her roots by forming the rose gold snaps on a cotton jacket into the shape of the house's Medusa logo.

Donatella Versace: The Weaponized Woman

Donatella Versce had a wide-ranging talk in front of the Oxford Student Union on Wednesday, addressing everything from how she coped with the death of her brother Gianni Versace to how women can use fashion as means of defense.

Donatella Versce had a wide-ranging talk in front of the Oxford Student Union on Wednesday, addressing everything from how she coped with the death of her brother Gianni Versace to how women can use fashion as means of defense.

"Fashion is a weapon that you can use when you need it," Versace said in a live interview with fashion journalist Tim Blanks. "I think my own look makes people think I'm tough but when they get to know me I'm very different. It's like armor that was useful to me in the first years after Gianni's death. . . I don't mean to sound like a martyr — just to make the point that I used my personal image to hide all these emotions."

Versace also talked about selling fashion in a tough economy, saying that she was glad to work with H&M on a lower-priced line. "I had no idea how they'd make my designs come to life at those prices, but they did it without restricting me at all," she said. As for her main collection, Versace said high-end clothing still sells because she pushes the envelope in terms of aesthetic and innovation.

"Designers have to ensure that their brand stays in the real world — like we have, hopefully, with Versus — but then you have to work hard to make sure the creativity survives," she said. "In hard times you still have to be extreme. My job now is to make our aesthetic evolve while remaining truly Versace — I want to make dresses that every woman wants: sexy and jaw-dropping — I always want it to be relevant but I also want it to be always about glamour."
