Watch Gemma Ward Speak at Her First Public Appearance in Three Years

>> After three years of shying away, Gemma Ward is slowly returning to the public eye.

>> After three years of shying away, Gemma Ward is slowly returning to the public eye. A few weeks ago, she was featured on the cover of Australia's Sunday Telegraph magazine, and inside she explained of her absence, "I have taken a break from the media spotlight for the last few years, and it was something spurred by Heath [Ledger]'s death. We first met in New York and we were both struggling with things that I won't get into, and we bonded over that. I kind of met him at first and said, 'Listen my mum's living with me right now and I'm kind of going through a hard time and I'm not interested in having a serious relationship with somebody right now' and he was like, 'You know, um, let's just be there for each other through these hard times we're both going through.' And we developed a relationship and we started seeing each other."

That was in November 2007, when Ward was 20; she and Ledger spent Christmas in Perth, Australia, together before heading back to New York, where he passed away shortly after on Jan. 22, 2008. "There was no one like him — and no one will ever be like him," she continued. "I'm just so grateful I got to meet him and get as close as I did with him."

Ward, now 23, is slated to star in the Perth Theatre Company's play The Ugly One, for which she will be in Australia for three months; rehearsals began on Feb. 14 (she was snapped taking a break the first morning), and opening night is March 22. Yesterday, her promotional photos for the play were released, and Ward appeared in front of media for the first time since taking her break for the play's press conference in Perth — video, above.

Reporters at the conference were limited to one question, and anything relating to Ward's personal life or modeling career was off limits, but Ward recently reiterated that she plans to continue both her acting and modeling career after her stint in The Ugly One: "Yes, of course [I can do both]. It is interesting because as a model you do play a certain role and you know as an actor you play another role. I am very, very devoted to things that I'm passionate about. I think in terms of me shying away from modelling, I would like to clarify in some way that I was taking a break from many things in my life and obviously what people in the public see is that I'm pulling away from what is more public. But in the full capacity of my life, it was a reassessment of everything and I've made a commitment to myself to address some things that were coming up to do with Heath's passing and also things that were troubling me before we met. So it was a retreat from many things in my life and I did think it was important for me to focus on those things. I didn't know how long it would take. I didn't know if it would solve anything, but I set out to focus inside myself."

Meanwhile, she seems to be enjoying her return — as she said yesterday, “It’s nice to have a job where you’re laughing through the day, bouncing ideas and collaborating.”

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Before you bank up your rentals for this weekend, consider these new releases.

Before you bank up your rentals for this weekend, consider these new releases. One is sweet, the other is totally trippy — and both are available for your viewing pleasure starting today.

It's Complicated

Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin play Jane and Jake, divorced parents who reignite the old flame in secret and stir up old feelings. Things really get, er, complicated when Jane begins seeing her nerdy architect (Steve Martin), and a love triangle is formed. Streep, Baldwin, and Martin are a delight to watch on screen, and they take this premise beyond typical rom-com schlock. But also rent it for John Krasinski who turns his supporting role as Streep and Baldwin's future son-in-law into a scene-stealer. DVD extras include a commentary track and featurette.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

In what is perhaps best known as Heath Ledger's final performance, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a whimsical morality tale about a group of circus-type performers who welcome visitors into one man's messed-up mind. Christopher Plummer plays the title role alongside Ledger and an ensemble made to look like the late actor, including Jude Law, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell. The cast is solid, but the story itself is a confusing, tangled mess. Even so, you can't do much better when it comes to interesting visual details to ogle, thanks to the creative mind of director Terry Gilliam. DVD extras include a deleted scene and interview with Ledger.

Favorite Movie Bad Boys

This Friday we'll get a peek at Michael Cera's mustached, naughty alter ego, Francois, in the new release Youth in Revolt. Francois is a rebel, torching buildings and breaking into girls dorm rooms — and yes, naturally, he's French. In honor of his general badass-ness, I decided to round up some of my favorite Francois predecessors in film (warning: lots of greasy hair and leather jackets ahead). Check them out!

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus: A Little Too Crazy

Not to be confused with that movie starring Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman (Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium), The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is perhaps best known as late actor Heath Ledger’s final role.

Not to be confused with that movie starring Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman (Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium), The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is perhaps best known as late actor Heath Ledger’s final role.

You may recall that his death occurred during production, in which case Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law stepped in to finish his role. The good news is that the transition from actor to actor is virtually seamless and works within the story’s construction perfectly.

The bad news? The film is still a bit of an all-over-the-map mess. To hear why, just read more

New Full Trailer For Dr. Parnassus Is Nuts

About midway through watching the new international trailer for The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, I realized I was holding my breath.

About midway through watching the new international trailer for The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, I realized I was holding my breath. It's such an unusual-looking film, I don't know which words to use to describe it except to say that it left me feeling excited and a little uneasy. The story is about an immortal doctor (played by Christopher Plummer) with a magical mirror who must give up his daughter (Lily Cole) to the devil (Tom Waits) on her 16th birthday. Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell all play a masked supporting character named Tony.

The movie will be released in the UK on Oct. 16. There's so much eerie, whimsical beauty in this movie, you should check it out for yourself
