Elysium Trailer: Matt Damon Is a Warrior of the Future

Matt Damon is flexing his action star muscle in the first trailer for Elysium, and this time, he's bald, beautiful, and ready to take on the oppressive forces of the future.

Matt Damon is flexing his action star muscle in the first trailer for Elysium, and this time, he's bald, beautiful, and ready to take on the oppressive forces of the future. It's the year 2154 and there's no war, disease, or poverty — if you're one of the privileged who lives on the space station Elysium. Damon's character Max unfortunately dwells on Earth, where things have gotten pretty bad, especially for ex-prisoner Max, who becomes infected with a deadly toxin. Knowing he could die unless he gets to Elysium, he agrees to go on a mission there to help the people of Earth, even though Elysium's authorities (including Jodie Foster) will do anything to stop him.

This is the second feature-length film from Neill Blomkamp, who also directed 2009's District 9, and if you saw that, the similarities to the setting in Elysium are unmistakable. Except for the aliens, unless you count the weird armor coming out of Matt Damon's character's skull. I loved District 9 and I love Damon more, so I'm interested, but I wish the sci-fi angle was a little more exciting and fresh. But watch and judge for yourself; Elysium is set for release Aug. 9, and you can watch the full trailer

The Best Highlights From the 2013 Golden Globes!

The 2013 Golden Globes were full of excitement and emotion in LA on Sunday night.

The 2013 Golden Globes were full of excitement and emotion in LA on Sunday night. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kept the evening light with their jokes and antics, like Amy nuzzling with George Clooney in the audience and the two of them likening Kathryn Bigelow's short-lived marriage to James Cameron to "torture." Other stars also got some big laughs as well, including presenter Aziz Ansari, who pretended to be stoned from Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery's weed cookies. Sacha Baron Cohen gave a mini roast of his Les Misérables costars, when he joked about Anne Hathaway's infamous upskirt incident and sarcastically remarked that Russell Crowe's singing lessons in preparation for the film was "money well spent." Jodie Foster came out while accepting her Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, moving many attendees to tears.

The show was also full of some big, surprising wins. Ben Affleck nabbed best director for Argo after getting shut out of the category for the Oscar nominations on Thursday, and Argo also won best drama motion picture over Lincoln. Hugh Jackman picked up the best actor in a comedy or musical honor, beating out favorite Bradley Cooper. Most winners broke down into happy tears while accepting their awards, including Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, and Lena Dunham. Lena got particularly emotional while admitting that she had looked up to her fellow best actress nominees when she was younger and that they helped her get through awkward moments. Always quick to add a joke, nominees Tina and Amy joked that they were happy they could get the young Lena "through middle school." Watch Jodie Foster Come Out in Memorable Golden Globe Speech

"This feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else," Jodie Foster said tonight at the Golden Globe Awards.

"This feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else," Jodie Foster said tonight at the Golden Globe Awards. In a somewhat confusing acceptance speech, which was bleeped out at parts, the actress alluded to the end of her relationship, saying she was single, and also thanked her ex-partner and coparent, Cydney Bernard.

In the speech, Jodie lamented that in today's age, "every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance, and a primetime reality show." The nervous actress explained that she is "not Honey Boo Boo child" and had already come out a long time ago the old-fashioned way, to close friends and family. She said: "I already did my coming out back in the Stone Age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually and proudly to everyone who knew her — to everyone she actually met."

Much of Jodie's acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the highest honor given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was spent promoting privacy. She said, "I have given everything up there from the time I was 3 years old. That is reality enough." You can watch the speech below.

Matt Damon Talks Elysium and Shows Off Footage at the Comic-Con Panel

Matt Damon came to Comic-Con for the first time to promote his new film, Elysium, which no one had seen footage from — until today! The panel audience was treated to a long preview of the movie, after which stars Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley came out to chat about the sci-fi action flick. They were with director Neill Blomkamp, who directed Copley in 2009's District 9, and he and the cast talked about Elysium's similarities to District 9, the stunts, and the rather yucky location shoots. Check out the details below.

  • We saw a lot of footage from the film, and I have to say I was quite impressed, starting with Blomkamp's world. In Elysium, it's 2159, and Earth is a dirty, inhospitable place to live, so the rich live on a space station called Elysium. The look of Earth (which was shot in Mexico City) in the film reminded me a lot of District 9; very dusty, desolate, and cluttered with litter. We also got some insight into Damon's character Max, a former prisoner who lives in the slums of the future. When he gets infected with a toxin and has only days left to live, he agrees to a mission to Elysium. Damon's Max is tough and sardonic (and, yes, bald), and, once he gets outfitted with armor, quite badass.
  • Damon and Foster both admitted to being attracted to the project because they both like Blomkamp's work so much. Damon said signing on was a "very easy decision after I saw District 9," while Foster called that movie "a perfect film," and when Elysium came up, "luckily the script came in and there was a girl in it."
  • Damon had a funny and gross story about shooting at the second-largest dump on the world in Mexico, where, he said, the dust was composed mostly of fecal matter. He said that after shooting some days, he and Copley would be black with dust and "we'd look at each other and go, 'This is fecal matter.'" But it was worth it for the finished project, and Damon said that afterward, "Neill would run up and say, 'I promise you the photography looks great.'" Damon added, "I just tried not to think about it."
  • Copley was excited to be back at Comic-Con, and he thanked the audience, calling it a defining moment of his life when he came to the convention in 2009 for District 9.
