Pain & Gain: Brawn Is No Substitute For Brains

Director Michael Bay trades in the Transformers for body builders in his latest (and definitely not greatest), Pain & Gain.

Director Michael Bay trades in the Transformers for body builders in his latest (and definitely not greatest), Pain & Gain. The movie is based on the morbidly outlandish true story of the Sun Gym Gang, headed by Miami personal trainer Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg). Obsessed with the American Dream but sick of working hard while catering to the rich and famous, Daniel hatches a plan to capture and extort one of his wealthy clients (Tony Shalhoub). The extraordinary real details of the case (think explosions, barbecued body parts, and a stripper who believes she's been invited to join the CIA) are bizarre and fascinating. It's a shame the movie is so overloaded with silly, gratuitous slow-motion shots and over-the-top action sequences that the style overshadows the story.

The film takes place in the early '90s in Miami, and the vibrant colors reflect the era but not the dark story that Pain & Gain is telling. When manipulative Daniel convinces ex-addict Paul (Dwayne Johnson) and roided-out pal Adrian (Anthony Mackie) to help him with his plan, the ensuing disaster is gruesome, dark, and depressing. What nobody ever told Daniel is that to achieve success, you have to be smart as well as a hard worker. (Wahlberg does however, look amazing, even giving a tongue-in-cheek shout-out to his modeling days when he sports Calvin Klein briefs in one scene.) The movie could have ended several times before it does, but it just keeps going, as the details get progressively sloppier and the plot holes keep piling up. Get more of my thoughts on Pain & Gain after the jump.

Mark Wahlberg was joined by Rebel Wilson for the premiere of their film Pain & Gain at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood last night.

Mark Wahlberg was joined by Rebel Wilson for the premiere of their film Pain & Gain at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood last night. Mark and Rebel were accompanied by costars Anthony Mackie and Bar Paly and their director, Michael Bay, for the West Coast premiere, while Mark had his other leading lady, wife Rhea Durham, by his side as well. Although Mark's been busy promoting the movie ahead of its Friday release, he took a break yesterday to pick up flowers with his sons, Michael and Brendan, before hitting the red carpet.

Rebel, who sparkled in a red Theia dress at the event, shared a picture from last night's festivities and complimented her costar on her Twitter, writing, "Mark Wahlberg is such a boss. We missed you The Rock, and send you kisses and hugs." Rebel was referring to their costar Dwayne Johnson, who was absent from the LA premiere. Rebel's night out was just her latest in a busy schedule that included hosting the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month. It doesn't look like things will be slowing down for her any time soon, either, since just last week Universal announced that a sequel to Pitch Perfect will be released in 2015.

Mark Wahlberg stepped out to buy flowers with his sons, Michael and Brendan, at Bristol Farms in LA yesterday. Mark smiled as he guided his boys through the parking lot and then opened the car door for them to hop in. The actor took in family time amid a busy round of promotions for his new movie Pain & Gain, which has had him jet-setting around US this month and back on the red carpet last night.

Last week, Mark showcased the film in NYC, where the Boston native also addressed the tragedy of the marathon bombings. In addition to premieres and screenings, Mark and his costar Dwayne Johnson cover Muscle & Fitness magazine's May issue, in which Mark opens up about gaining 40 pounds to play the role of bodybuilder-turned-criminal Daniel Lugo. We'll get to see his hard work on the big screen when Pain & Gain hits theaters this Friday — get ready with a sneak peek at Pain & Gain!

Mark Wahlberg wore an all-black ensemble to the NYC screening of Pain & Gain at the Crosby Street Hotel last night. He was joined by rapper 50 Cent, Peter Facinelli, who had girlfriend Jaimie Alexander by his side, and New York Giants football star Victor Cruz for the movie's NYC debut. Olivia Palermo and boyfriend Johannes Huebl also joined Mark to take in his latest film. Missing from the action was his costar Dwayne Johnson, although he and Mark linked up last week to premiere Pain & Gain in Miami ahead of its April 26 release.

Last night was an unexpectedly somber occasion for Boston native Mark on the heels of the Boston Marathon bombings. Mark took to his Twitter account yesterday to wish his hometown well, saying, "Thoughts and prayers with my hometown Boston today." Mark was torn between supporting his film and expressing his worry for his family members back in Boston, and he conveyed his true feelings about the tragedy in an interview with reporters last night, explaining, "I really didn't even want to come tonight. I hadn't really heard much — I spoke to my mom, and most of my family seems to be okay. It's such a big event, there's so many people there. It's horrible man. It's [expletive] disgusting, man. I just — I'm very upset."

2 Guns Trailer: Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington Team Up

We've seen Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington play badasses on the big screen plenty of times before, but seeing them together takes things to a new level.

We've seen Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington play badasses on the big screen plenty of times before, but seeing them together takes things to a new level. In the trailer for 2 Guns, Wahlberg and Washington play Marcus and Bobby, a pair of criminals who rob a bank together. It's a little remniscent of The Town (I blame the creepy masks) until — twist! — Marcus reveals himself as an undercover Naval Officer. But wait — double twist! — Bobby is undercover, too, except he's a DEA agent. Turns out they were set up, and now they have to work together to take down the real bad guys, who are led by a very creepy-looking Bill Paxton.

2 Guns could be easily passed off as another run-of-the-mill action movie, except that Wahlberg and Washington are so perfect together. The trailer has a few laugh-out-loud moments thanks to the banter between their two characters, which is enough reason to make me want to check it out. The film hits theaters Aug. 2, and you can watch the trailer when you read more
