Captain Phillips Trailer: Tom Hanks Gets Hijacked on the High Seas

Tom Hanks takes the lead in Captain Phillips, the trailer that already has me swearing off any future ocean escapades.

Tom Hanks takes the lead in Captain Phillips, the trailer that already has me swearing off any future ocean escapades. Hanks plays Captain Richard Phillips in the terrifying true story of the Maersk Alabama, a ship that was commandeered by Somali pirates in 2009. The trailer really builds the tension, starting slowly and quietly as Phillips notices two dots approaching his ship on the radar screen. He knows the passengers are "not here to fish."

I couldn't help but shrink into my seat watching this trailer, and I'm not sure I could handle the whole harrowing movie. Although, given that one my my favorite actors of all time is in the lead role, I'm gonna have to chance it. Captain Phillips opens Oct. 11. Until then, watch the trailer after the jump.

Cloud Atlas' Many Faces: See Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and More as Different Races and Genders

Now that Cloud Atlas is in theaters, the world can finally check out the film based on the epic novel by David Mitchell.
Halle Berry

Now that Cloud Atlas is in theaters, the world can finally check out the film based on the epic novel by David Mitchell. The film covers six different stories over the course of time and space, but the same core group of actors show up from one tale to the next — and not exactly in their most recognizable forms. Thanks to the magic of (a lot of) makeup, the actors transcend race, gender, and age to take on different guises and personalities. I've broken down each actor by the multiple characters they play in the film. Check it out.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art brought out a host of stars for its annual Art and Film Gala on Saturday night. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux mingled with friends Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz at the event — it was actually Drew's first post-baby night out! Salma Hayek and Kerry Washington also made appearances.

Robert Pattinson suited up for the night out after returning to the West Coast from his Australian Breaking Dawn Part 2 press tour. He posed with Cameron, who made her latest red carpet run following her appearance at the opening of Rag & Bone's new LA store on Friday. Amy Adams met up with Tom Hanks, while Minka Kelly and her boyfriend Chris Evans posed separately on their way into the bash, which honored Ed Ruscha and Stanley Kubrick. Florence Welch performed, and Evan Rachel Wood also took the microphone during the star-studded evening.

Cloud Atlas Is Thought-Provoking, but . . .

Cloud Atlas is based on the bestselling book by David Mitchell, and its six interconnected stories follow many characters in different places and times, who are played by the same set of actors, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Sturgess.

Cloud Atlas is based on the bestselling book by David Mitchell, and its six interconnected stories follow many characters in different places and times, who are played by the same set of actors, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Sturgess. This element necessitates lots of makeup and prosthetics, but it's not necessarily one of the film's strengths. It is, however, one example of how ambitious the adaptation from the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer is. There are revolutions, love stories, and epic battles, but Cloud Atlas only fulfills some of its potential. Read on to find out how Cloud Atlas almost gets there.

  • The film is thought-provoking. There are lots of interesting themes throughout Cloud Atlas, particularly the idea that we are all connected and keep meeting in different lifetimes.
  • But . . . The filmmakers seem determined to make sure you know that the people are the same in different time periods, using the same actors over and over again. It's an interesting idea, but the execution is all wrong. Hanks, Berry, and Sturgess are made to look like different races, ages and sometimes, genders — but it's rarely convincing. So while you're supposed to be moved by the idea that two people who can't be together in one lifetime find each other in the next, it's too hard to focus on that when you're looking at an Asian version of Jim Sturgess.
  • The stories are compelling. I was invested in most of the stories, especially because the narrative jumps around through them, often ending on riveting cliffhangers.
  • But . . . The movie is too long. Cloud Atlas runs almost three hours, comprehensively covering each storyline. The problem is that not every story is so strong. There are a couple tales that could have been left out to make the movie shorter, without losing the overarching themes.

To find out what else I thought of Cloud Atlas, just keep reading.

Matt was dressed in his trench best as Private Ryan since the "planned" segment about inexpensive Halloween costumes for kids was really a promotional parody for Tom's extensive filmography. Matt relished his cameo in the skit, and even took some time to rib his best friend and new neighbor, Ben Affleck. Get in on the joke with today's PopSugar Rush.
