The Big Wedding Review: 5 Similar Movies to Watch Instead

If you're a romantic-comedy lover with a soft spot for wedding movies, then trust me — you've already seen The Big Wedding.

If you're a romantic-comedy lover with a soft spot for wedding movies, then trust me — you've already seen The Big Wedding. The premise itself probably sounds familiar: when a family comes together for a wedding, hijinks ensue, people don't get along, and secrets are revealed. Even most of the cast members have played similar roles before. Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro play the groom's parents, Katherine Heigl is the bitter sister, and Amanda Seyfried plays the bride. And the unoriginality doesn't stop there! If you're tempted to watch The Big Wedding, then let me advise you that you can get the same fix by watching the movies below. Their accomplishment: they each tackled elements of The Big Wedding first — but better.

  1. It's Complicated: In Nancy Meyers's comedy It's Complicated, the romance between the divorced couple played by Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin feels organic and realistic. That's not the case for Keaton and De Niro's characters in Ellie and Don, the divorced parents of groom Alejandro (Ben Barnes) in The Big Wedding. Oh, it is complicated for them — despite the fact that they haven't been married for over 10 years, sparks still fly between them during the wedding weekend — even though he's already moved on with someone else. When Ellie and Don move closer to a reconnection, it's icky and doesn't make sense for their characters.
  2. Wedding Crashers: The Big Wedding is rated R, so there's a healthy dose of raunchy humor, but there's nothing you haven't seen before, especially if you've seen Wedding Crashers. There is even one scene that is straight out of the Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn classic. For frisky family members and R-rated wedding jokes, just watch Wedding Crashers.

The Big Wedding Trailer: Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton Throw a Star-Studded Event

There's a good chance the trailer for The Big Wedding will feel very familiar to you, because it features a ton of stars in roles we've seen them play before.

There's a good chance the trailer for The Big Wedding will feel very familiar to you, because it features a ton of stars in roles we've seen them play before. Amanda Seyfried as a bride-to-be? Check. Robin Williams as a wedding officiant? Check. Diane Keaton as the mother of the bride? Check. The list goes on, as the huge cast also includes the likes of Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, and Katherine Heigl, to name a few. The ensemble is drawn together in the name of Alejandro (Ben Barnes), who wants to invite his birth mother to his wedding to Missy (Seyfried). Ready for the wacky twist? He wants his adoptive parents (Keaton and De Niro) to act like they're still together because his birth mother doesn't believe in divorce.

Though the trailer is filled with clichés (think awkward sexual scenarios, uptempo classic songs, and kids who seem to be more mature than their parents), it's still kind of charming. Maybe it's because the preview reminds me of It's Complicated, which is a movie that I love despite its predictability, or that I just resist the cast. The film hits theaters on Oct. 26, but watch the trailer when you read more

Malin Akerman and Jenna Fischer Debut Their Giant Mechanical Man at Tribeca

The Tribeca Film Festival continued last night with the premiere of Malin Akerman and Jenna Fischer's The Giant Mechanical Man.

The Tribeca Film Festival continued last night with the premiere of Malin Akerman and Jenna Fischer's The Giant Mechanical Man. Jenna was joined at the event by the film's director and her husband, Lee Kirk, while Malin walked the red carpet in a sexy strapless dress and Carven shoes before meeting up with her handsome costars Topher Grace, Chris Messina, and Rich Sommer.

This project is just one of the many movies Malin stars in this year. She shared hilarious scenes with Jennifer Aniston in Wanderlust, and up next she's showing off her vocal abilities in Rock of Ages. Malin's not the only cast member with a major studio film in the works as both Chris and Topher have highly anticipated films headed our way this Fall. Chris has a role in Ben Affleck's CIA thriller Argo, and Topher teamed up with Amanda Seyfried and Katherine Heigl in The Wedding, both films are expected to open nationwide in October.

Jon Hamm joined the fun at last night's Hollywood Dominoes fundraiser. The organization's fifth annual gala, held at LA's Sunset Tower Hotel, brought out stars like Edward Norton, Ali Larter, Sophia Bush, and Ben Stiller. LeAnn Rimes wore a revealing Tom Ford dress on the carpet, looking happy to pose for photos. The evening was organized to benefit Paul Haggis's Artists For Peace and Justice organization. Jon apparently ended up the night's big winner, and became the proud owner of a brand new watch. It's a highlight during a busy period for Jon. His Mad Men will be back on AMC on March 25 — check out the new Mad Men promos. He's also got Friends With Kids, a movie written, directed by, and starring his real-life girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, opening on March 9.

Stephen Moyer and Topher Grace might play adversaries in their new spy thriller The Double, but when we talked to them at a recent press day for the movie, the guys were in a friendly — and funny — mood. The duo even showed off a little bit of the Russian they learned for their roles as an FBI agent (Topher) and Russian operative (Stephen) and critiqued each others' accents! Stephen and Topher also talked about being intimidated by their costar, Richard Gere, and Topher admitted that his biggest challenge in the film was playing the father of an infant. Check out our interview, and catch The Double in select theaters starting today.

Richard Gere and Topher Grace Track an Assassin in The Double Trailer

A Russian assassin is on the loose in Washington DC in The Double trailer, and it's up to Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) to track him down.

A Russian assassin is on the loose in Washington DC in The Double trailer, and it's up to Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) to track him down. Shepherdson, a former CIA operative, has come out of retirement to track down the hitman he spent his entire career chasing down — and he begrudgingly accepts the help of an FBI rookie, Ben Geary (Topher Grace). Throughout much of the trailer, Shepherdson attempts to convince his young partner that the assassin is actually dead, suggesting Geary drop the case if he has any concern for the safety of his young wife and kids. So why is a man who is working the case so eager to abandon it?

That's where The Double trailer starts to give too much away. In what seems to be a major plot spoiler, it reveals that Shepherdson may be the assassin he's been assigned to bring in, and it's a pretty safe bet that Shepherdson is up to some duplicitous, double-agent (ahem, thanks to the film title for tipping us off to that, too) shenanigans in the film. The Double hits theaters Sept. 23, but see what you make of the trailer when you read more

Hollywood's up-and-coming talent came together Friday night at LA's Club Nokia for the 13th annual Young Hollywood Awards. More statues went out to Style Icon Camilla Belle, in a Tom Ford suit, and Star of Tomorrow Armie Hammer, who caught up with his hilarious Parks and Recreation star pal Aziz Ansari. Camilla stuck close by her supposed real-life leading man, Topher Grace. Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams was crowned TV actor of the year, while Elle Fanning had her Somewhere director Sofia Coppola's dad, Francis, on hand to witness her film actress of the year honor. Buzz Time Machine: Topher Grace Sings "Fernando" on That '70s Show

Topher Grace goes back in time to the '80s with his new movie Take Me Home Tonight, but traveling to another decade is old hat for the actor, who got his start on That '70s Show.

Topher Grace goes back in time to the '80s with his new movie Take Me Home Tonight, but traveling to another decade is old hat for the actor, who got his start on That '70s Show. Grace captured my heart as Eric Forman, the sweet center of his group of friends on the vintage-themed series. More than a decade after the show first aired, Grace has come far (as have his costars), so to celebrate his big screen flick today, watch him in one of my favorite scenes from That '70s Show. In it, Eric romances Donna by singing ABBA's "Fernando," which turns into a silly duet — keep it together as you check out his sweet moves.
