Long-wear, gel-inspired nail polish has long been a buzzy phrase in the beauty biz, and while many brands are getting into the game, Chanel just changed it. This March, the fashion house is releasing completely reformulated versions of its beloved Chanel Le Vernis lacquers, proving the perfect product is worth waiting for.
There will be 15 gorgeous shades plus one a new topcoat (dubbed Le Gel), which will extend your shiny mani for seven days. Five of the bestselling hues (Ballerina, Particuliere, Vamp, Pirate, and Rouge Noir) were kept, and 10 fresh shades were created for this epic launch. Expect trend-forward colors, such as midnight blue, elegant rose, slate gray, and party-ready gold. We predict Chanel's cult-fan following will make these glossy lacquers fly off the shelves and sell out online this Spring, so preorder yours now for $28 each on Chanel's website.
As an early tester of the new product, I can say with authority that it works. After getting my digits done by celebrity manicurist and Chanel ambassador Ashlie Johnson, I put the product to the test washing dishes, clutching dumbbells during my barre workout, and endlessly typing during my day job. The five-free held up to my obstacles (I even chose that aforementioned deep blue, so chips would have been noticeable). I can thank such nail-strengthening ingredients as bioceramics and ceramides for improving quality of my nails from using this formula. Plus, I didn't have to subject my nails to UV lights and chemicals often found in gels.
"I love that the new formula not only lasts longer, but that it actually helps to repair the condition of your natural nails," Johnson echoed. "My nails feel more protected and conditioned when wearing it; the thicker formula is more durable and super shiny."
I'm not the only fan. Johnson confirmed she has recently used it on her A-list clients, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kirsten Dunst, and Brie Larson. "Everyone has really loved the new shades and how fast it dries," she enthused. "[They are] always very busy so that's an added bonus."
Since we can't all get our paws painted by a Hollywood pro, Johnson offered her tips for an at-home DIY manicure. First, she advised not to overdue it. "I personally feel that the new long-wear formula lasts even better with just one coat of a color shade," she explained. "Since it's a thicker formula, it goes on very smooth. And it's very pigmented, making one coat enough most of the time. This also saves on drying time."
But make sure you don't miss a spot — especially at the tips of your nails. "After the application of the gel topcoat, I always swipe the free edge [of your nail] twice to give an extra layer of protection," Johnson explained. "You can also add a coat of Extreme Brilliance on top of the Le Gel coat after a couple days to refresh and extend wear."
