Formaldehyde-, Toluene-, and DBP-Free Nail Polishes

The Formaldehyde-, Toluene-, and DBP-Free Nail Polishes We Love

When you hear about polishes being eco-friendly and/or safe, you'll hear people discuss being free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (or three-free). So we've rounded up a list of polish we love that fit the bill and even put together a little bit of a shopping list for you!

Butter London: We love the bold runway-inspired shades and cool top-coat effects.

SpaRitual: Not surprisingly, you'll find this line in lots of high-end nail salons.

RGB: This brand attracts all the cool girls with its edgy shades and collaborators.

Deborah Lippman: The star manicurist brought all of her star savvy to her own line, which is five-free (toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, or DBP, and isn't tested on animals).

Jin Soon: The backstage and editorial pro brought all the cutting edge shades to her five-free line, which she puts to use in amazing nail art tutorials.

NARS: All we can say is that beauty editors are certifiably obsessed with this luxe range and for good reason!

@charmediamsure Formaldehyde is considered one of the big three, but that ingredient is a little complex. Here's more info on the safety: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/706587/TOSYLAMIDE%3B%3B_FORMALDEHYDE_RESIN/ http://www.alllacqueredup.com/2007/05/big-3-chemicals-that-is.html

Quick question: All my China Glaze polishes list "tosylamide formaldehyde resin" as an ingredient. Is this not one of the things to avoid? Just wondering how official the word is on China Glaze being one of the "three-free".

I love, love Nars nail polishes - the colors always come out great.I've been using Fast Dry Coat (http://www.nailaidworks.com/slow-drying-manicure.php), which I got at Walmart, of all places. Also no formaldehyde or other chemicals. I love Chanel nail color, but I'm not exactly sure how "natural" it is...

ahh its always nice to know there are cheaper options. i love me some nars but usually stick with opi....ok ok even nyc for the crazier/one-time-use colors.

Honestly you would have to be painting your nails continuously for some 20+ years for any of these ingredients in the polish to be considered "harmful." Many of the newer polishes that don't contain toluene don't have as much staying power... just an FYI from a beauty insider.

That's really good to know. I've got a lot of Sally Hanson and Maybelline Salon Expert polishes as well as a few newer OPI.

i love china glaze and OPI! lippman and nars' polishes are a little too pricey for me - i prefer not to spend more than $7 or 8 (max) for a bottle of polish. i'm glad these companies aren't using the big 3 chemicals - does anyone know of a more natural polish remover?

I checked their websites and Wet 'N Wild and NYC also make cheap polishes free of the big three. :)

Oh good! I was worried the safe polishes would be expensive or hard to find, and I own a lot of these brands already. Thanks Bella!

I just succumbed to purchasing from Butter London (actually, I got the set in the photo above), and I'm really happy with the polishes. They last a long time, don't leave a strong scent while you're using the polish, and they have a lot of original colors.

Ooooh, thanks so much Bella! This is such great information to have, now I just have to go through my makeup drawer and see if I have any swimming around in there.
