DIY This Topsy-Turvy Textured Ponytail in 3 Simple Steps
From stuffy updos to classic old Hollywood waves, holiday hair can get pretty tiresome. Skip the been-there-done-that styles for this simple twist (pun intended) on the classic ponytail. Although it may look intimidating, the how-to includes three simple steps on repeat. (And if those twisted ponytails look like a '90s throwback, that's because they are.) Follow as hairstylist Jo Blackwell-Preston, owner of Dop Dop Salon, walks us through the simple process.
Step 1
Create texture in your mane by curling two- to three-inch sections of hair with a 1.5-inch curling iron. Wrap the hair away from your face.
Step 2
Start with your index fingers at the end of your eyebrows. "With your fingernails you're going to go straight back and grab the hair into a ponytail," says Blackwell-Preston. When securing this ponytail, wrap the elastic only two times around the hair to keep it loose.
Step 3
After the hair is secured with an elastic, create your first loop ponytail. "Take your index and middle fingers in between, grab the ponytail, and pull it through." Clip the ponytail so it's out of your way and you can focus on the rest of your hair.
Step 4
To make your next ponytail, pull the area around your sideburns straight back into the center of your head. Secure it with an elastic, and make a hole in the center of the pulled-back part. Pull the tail of the ponytail through to create a knot. Clip it out of the way.
Step 5
Use the remaining loose hair for your final ponytail. Pull the strands back and secure just below the occipital bone. Again, make a hole in the center of the pulled-back part and loop the ponytail through.
Step 6
Release the top ponytails from the clips.
Step 7
First pull the middle ponytail through the center of the bottom ponytail. Then follow suit by pulling the top ponytail through the center of the middle.
Step 8
Use Kerastase VIP Volume in Powder Spray ($37) to add more texture. Scrunch with your fingertips for a fuller effect.
