7 Times You Shouldn't Skimp on Your Beauty Sleep

We all know sleep is important for your bod, but there are times when you really should get that extra shut-eye. We partnered with Olay Fresh Effects to highlight those moments.

For something that's already part of your 24-hour routine, free, and pretty easy to obtain, sleep is one big thing most of us don't take advantage of. And it's a myth that you can skimp on slumber and still be fresh-faced in the morning. Your body needs those hours for rejuvenation — both inside and out. Lack of sleep results in dilated blood vessels, puffy eyes, and a blah complexion. And not getting enough can also amp up your stress levels. Check out our solutions for those times you should have gotten your beauty sleep.

Graduation

Sure, you're probably going to party all night after tossing your cap, but this is a big day in your life that will most likely include taking lots of pictures. Instead of looking back and frowning over under-eye circles, toss back lots of water the day before to aid in hydrating your skin. And skimping on sleep during this exciting time can suppress your immune system, which is no fun.

Before a Big Interview

Interviews are big on first impressions, making them a serious moment for healthy skin. When prepping for an interview, skip alcohol at least one night before, which can cause your face to appear puffy and stops your body from falling into a deep sleep. And you might want to think about investing in a high-thread-count cotton or 100 percent silk pillowcase, which cuts down on face creases.

The last thing you want to do is scare away your potential future life mate with puffy and drowsy eyes. It's a look that can easily be avoided by ditching coffee at least four to six hours before bedtime. And skip the drinks the night before. Wake up with a big glass of cool water with lemon, and you'll be wonderfully fresh when it's date time.

Meeting the Parents

No one wants to meet a significant other's parents for the first time with a dull complexion (or smeared makeup from last night's "festivities"). Lack of sleep can really be tough on your skin, so stick with at least seven hours nightly. And hitting the hay at the same time every night sets your sleep clock, getting your body into a happy slumbering rhythm. If you're lacking a bit of glow, spritz your face with mineral water for a quick fix.

Because you'll be immortalized through wedding pictures, being a bridesmaid is another reason to get the best slumber ever. Lack of sleep can trigger tons of complexion issues, so treating your skin with lots of love and care before bed is a must. Growth hormones are released while you're sleeping, specifically ones that are responsible for stimulating skin cell production, which is reason enough for getting seven hours of shut-eye.

Your Wedding

OK, you're probably already having a hard time sleeping from prewedding excitement, but the night before your wedding isn't for hitting the clubs — or an all-night giggle fest with your bridesmaids. Go to sleep early (really early!) and prop yourself up so you're surrounded by pillows, which keeps you on your back. You'll fall asleep faster and wake up face-crinkle free. If you can, get a massage or spa treatment the week before the big day to relieve some stress, another common cause of skin issues.

If you're looking overworked, you're less likely to get that raise, so glowing skin is a must when meeting with the higher-ups. When you're getting a solid night's sleep regularly, your skin benefits, which allows beauty products to work their best. If you do happen to have puffy eyes the morning of a big meeting, take the time to apply a cold compress for a quick eye lift.
