How Lana Condor Got Ready For Her First Met Gala

Lana Condor got ready for her first Met Gala with a team of glam experts and gave POPSUGAR an exclusive peek at how her campy beauty look was achieved. To start off, makeup artist Anton Khachaturian asked Condor to use a Talika Bio Enzymes Hydrating Mask ($12) the morning of the event. When it was time to prep her skin for makeup, Khachaturian chose Eye Therapy Patches ($9) and Photo Hydra Day Intense Moisturizing Face Cream ($45). He stressed the importance of having hydrated skin as a base for makeup. "Proper moisturizing and having a perfectly prepped canvas definitely helps and is my main component for lasting makeup," he said.

Because Condor's dress was already so over the top, Khachaturian kept her makeup understated and fun. "I wanted to keep her makeup fresh and beautiful. I used a razor-thin liner and [pink eye shadow] on top to boost the campiness while still keeping the look chic," he said. To make the eyes really pop, Khachaturian layered on Lashify lashes. "I did four clusters on the outside and then two clusters of [a shorter lash] on the inside," he said. "After doing one layer, I doubled everything up!"

Hairstylist Matt Fugate designed Condor's hair so that it wouldn't compete with her dress. "I wanted to do something romantic yet still showstopping, so we created a textured asymmetric updo that emphasized shape and balance," he said.

Fugate instructed Lana to show up with second-day hair so that it would have extra texture. Once she arrived, Fugate prepped the hair. "I used Dove Care Between Washes Foam Dry Shampoo ($4) on her roots and then flipped her hair over and power-dried for texture. I then added Dove Re-Hydrating Mist ($5) all over her hair."

To add even more texture to the hair, he used a small curling iron to create waves around the crown of her head and face before brushing it out to add softness. He then added the volume and fullness version of the dry shampoo. Because the dry shampoo provided some hold to the style, Fugate slipped dry shampoo.

As for her updo, it was actually created by placing a low pigtail on one side of her head and a high pigtail on the other. He then created "bubbles" using elastics down the length of the hair, and pulled and pushed the hair to create more of a messy look. Finally, he secured up the ponytail with pins to create the airy loose look.

To give Condor's hair the necessary texture, Fugate doused her roots with Dove Care Between Washes Foam Dry Shampoo ($4) and then flipped her hair over and power-dried for texture.

Fugate used Dove Style + Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray ($5) on the ends of each section of hair to protect it from damage.

Fugate ensured the curls were soft and fluffy. "I vigorously brushed out the curls." he said. "It's all about the texture here so the more brushing the better."

The "Bubble" Ponytails

To create the shape of the updo, Fugate started with two asymmetrical ponytails. "I took both ponytails and turned them into plump airy bubbles, by taking small elastic bands and securing them down the pony." He then pushed and pulled different sections of the hair and spritzed more dry shampoo on each section.
