Exclusive! Get the Most Badass Brows of Your Life With MAC's New Line

When we're looking to master a beauty trend, one makeup brand's expertise (and its army of professionals!) comes to mind: MAC Cosmetics. The team taught us how the "kitten paws" technique makes strobing look flawless, tricks for contouring every skin tone and face shape, and what to avoid when doing our own makeup for headshots. Now that bold brows are here to stay, MAC is advising us on how to get amazing arches with its newest collection, Brows Are It!

The brand tapped Damone Roberts, brow expert and beauty therapist (and former MAC artist!), as a consultant on developing this line. "I worked for MAC 20 years ago and I learned so much," gushed Roberts. "Then I went out to really explore the brow business because I saw how important it was. There are so many brow products out there, but they aren't the right products — they're just products that say 'eyebrows' on them."

The arch guru was adamant in his mission to achieve a range of formulas and hues that would work for everyone. "Your skin can be the palest pale to the darkest dark, and we'll have a shade for you," Roberts said. He worked with MAC to create eight new products, including brushes, powder duos, and three types of pencils, in an incredible variety of colors.

It's easy to be overwhelmed by your options when it comes to makeup in this category, and it's especially difficult to determine your perfect arch hue. Roberts recommends that you look at your roots. "Even if you're blond, your base is deeper. You want to match to the deeper base to your brow color," he suggested.

However, if you are ultrafair or your hair is black, skip matching your mane. "If your hair is really light, you want to go one to two shades darker, and if your hair is dark, you want to go one to two shades lighter," he counseled. This way, you'll get natural, believable-looking brows.

Still not sure whether you should be selecting a gel, powder, or a pencil? It's all about getting the shape you want. Roberts exclusively schooled us on the five hottest arch shapes for 2016 and how to achieve them with products from the MAC Cosmetics Brows Are It! collection. Trust us — the tips are supereasy to follow, even if you don't have the steadiest hands. Read on!

The Full, Natural Brow

We're not surprised that a thick, dark brow like Cara Delevingne's is the trendiest arch shape. "I get pictures of her in my salon [from my clients] daily," remarked Roberts. "A fuller brow does equal a more youthful appearance."

The easiest way to mimic these fluffy arches is using a chubby brow pencil like the new MAC Cosmetics Big Brow Pencil ($21, available in five shades). "It creates an unstructured, full brow so they look a little more volumized and fuller, but still natural," explained Roberts.

Don't worry about going overboard and drawing on arches that look more "Sharpie" than sharp. Even though the stylus is large, the color is very buildable, so it'll go on smoothly.

The Straight Brow

This shape (modeled here by '30s beauty icon Marlene Dietrich) is characterized by what is almost a lack of a higher point in the brow. Instead of coming to an apex, it looks close to a straight line from front to tail. "It's pretty much straighter on the bottom and more natural on top," said Roberts.

To achieve the distinctly defined shape of the straight brow, Roberts suggested using the new Fluidline Brow Gelcreme ($17, available in three shades). This waterproof product is highly blendable and dries quickly for a smudge-proof finish. "It gives a really precise definition so you can kind of make that line appear straighter underneath," he said.

If this is your first time using a formula in a pot, do not be alarmed. While this may seem like more of a pro product, Roberts insists that the key to mastery is not your technique, but what you use to apply it.

"The problem most women have when using a gel is that the brush is too flimsy and tends to go all over the place," he said. The 266 Small Angle Brush ($20) was created with this issue in mind, and has short, stiff bristles that allow for supermeticulous application.

"It's almost like taking a pen to paper," added Roberts. He advised that when filling in brows with gel, one should start at the front and work towards the arch in short, feathered strokes.

The Classic Dramatic Arch

"A classic, dramatic arch is never going to go out of style," declared Roberts. His client Taraji P. Henson is a perfect example of this striking brow shape.

To achieve this look at home, skip the creams and pomades in favor of a pencil. "Because this dramatic arch is so defined, I find that a pencil is better to work with," explained Roberts. "It's almost like you're tracing the eyebrow."

Grab the new MAC Cosmetics Eye Brows ($17, available in three shades) to fill in your arches: it's superskinny, which allows you to carefully sketch on each hair. To avoid an overly penciled-in brow, Roberts recommended that you use the product to "kiss the hair."

"You’re not pressing really hard, you’re just lightly enhancing," he clarified. "I’ll have clients trace their eyebrows just like it's a coloring book — trace it first and fill in really softly."

The Defined Dramatic Arch

Roberts counted Katy Perry's intensely structured arches as one of the hottest brow shapes for 2016. What makes this dramatic brow different from Taraji's is that it is more strongly delineated — it is intentionally created to appear drawn on.

"Her brows are pretty dramatic . . . you can tell they're painted on, but that's the look," said Roberts, who recommends a very durable, longwearing formula for this style of arch. "If you get caught in a rainstorm, you don't want them melting down to your eyelashes!" he joked.

To re-create Katy's brows, try MAC Cosmetics Veluxe Brow Liner ($21, available in 10 shades). Though it's a pencil, the formula has a unique texture that makes it almost like a powder in a stick. This provides the precision of a pencil but the opaque application of a brow powder, creating a matte, velvety finish. The fine particles cling to the teensiest hairs and plump up sparse arches, but don't fade or sweat off. Bring this product on your next tropical vacation!

Roberts gave a nod to another client, Jenna Dewan Tatum, for his last trendy brow shape. "She's really working the feathered brow," he said proudly. This means the arch is brushed up and set in place with gel. "[The hairs are] defined individually, so they don't look as if they're just laying there," he explained. "They're actually a little more spiked."

This simple-yet-chic look is easily replicated with MAC Cosmetics Brow Set ($17, available in three shades). "Just run the spooly brush through the brow from the beginning to the end — it gives that feathered look," said Roberts.

He cites this product as the best product for brow beginners. "By simply brushing your brows upward and keeping them in that direction, it opens up the eye," he explained. Even men can benefit from a bit of gel! Roberts uses the clear formula on many of his male clients, including Channing Tatum and Robert Downey Jr. "They love it — it serves its purpose but you can’t see it," he reported.
