When Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner traded hair colors for a day, it made a big splash at Paris Fashion Week. The beauty stunt was accomplished with the help of the Balmain beauty team and, at the time, seemed like a clever way to bring energy to a special show. But now, The Business of Fashion has revealed that the great KenGi hair swap of 2016 was part of a broader stragegy on behalf of the fashion house to grow the beauty side of their business, which — until now — has gone somewhat undetected in the American market.

According to BoF's Robert Cordero, Kendall and Gigi's hairpieces were created by Nabil Harlow of Balmain Hair, a separate but related company to the house of Balmain. Balmain Hair currently sells products and brushes online, in select stores, and in a number of salons nationwide, but the company has big plans to expand, especially in the American market.

Balmain Hair also has a long history of creating wigs and hair pieces, both of which could figure into the growth strategy. With Gigi and Kendall's social media reach, the brand was able to target potential millenial customers who may be interested in changing up their locks and investing in hair pieces and products. Relying on Kendall and Gigi to help spread a brand message is clearly a great idea — and not one limited to Balmain alone.
