Sophia Bush Honors Her Ex-Boyfriend After His Death on Mount Everest

The devastating earthquake in Nepal is personal for Sophia Bush. On Saturday, the actress learned that her ex-boyfriend Dan Fredinburg was climbing Mount Everest when the magnitude 7.8 quake set off an avalanche. Dan and at least 16 other people on the mountain died. "There are no adequate words," Sophia wrote in a touching tribute to the Google executive. "Today I find myself attempting to pick up the pieces of my heart that have broken into such tiny shards, I'll likely never find them all." To honor his memory, Sophia tweeted a link to a Crowdrise campaign to raise money for child victims of the disaster. According to the donation page, Dan was "climbing Everest on behalf of OrphanGift in support of two Nepali orphanages when the earthquake struck."

Dan's sister Megan confirmed the news on his Instagram account, on which he shared several pictures of his trip in the days before his death. "I regret to inform all who loved him that during the avalanche on Everest early this morning our Dan suffered from a major head injury and didn't make it," she wrote. "We appreciate all of the love that has been sent our way thus far and know his soul and his spirit will live on in so many of us."
