David Letterman's mother, Dorothy Mengering, has passed away at age 95, Entertainment Weekly confirms. Dorothy, known affectionately as "Dave's mom" by his loyal viewers, was a correspondent on The Late Show over the years, helping with her son's top 10 lists and filing segments from her Indiana home. She previously spoke about her unexpected fame when discussing her 1996 cookbook, Home Cookin' With Dave's Mom, with The New York Times. "I couldn't believe how it all took off," she said. "I think it's about the idea of mom and of a family. People are eager for families to be like they used to be. Even though there are lots of working moms and single-parent families now, you can still be a family in spite of the size and form it takes." Stephen Colbert, who took over David's show when he retired in 2015, tweeted his condolences shortly after the news broke.
