The Palace Releases a New Photo of Queen Elizabeth With Some of the Youngest Royals

Before Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022, the monarch spent time with her family over the summer — including posing for a snapshot with some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In a new photo released by Kensington Palace on April 21, Queen Elizabeth sits on a couch at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeen, Scotland, surrounded by 10 of the younger members of her family, including Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4. The Palace also revealed that the sweet image was captured by their mom, Kate Middleton.

Also in the picture are Prince Edward's children (and the Queen's grandchildren) Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, 19, and James, Earl of Wessex, 15, both standing in the back. Zara Tindall's children — Mia, 9, Lena, 4, and Lucas, 2, — are also in the photograph, as are Peter Phillips's two daughters, Savannah, 12, and Isla, 11. Zara and Peter are both children of the Queen's daughter Princess Anne.

Elizabeth and her late husband, Prince Philip, had four children — King Charles, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward — and they gave them eight grandchildren. So far, the queen has 12 great-grandchildren. One of Elizabeth's grandchildren, Princess Eugenie, is currently pregnant, and her child is expected to be the Queen's first great-grandchild born since her passing in the fall.

Notably not pictured in the photograph from this summer are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's kids: Archie, 3, and Lilibet, who'll turn 2 this June. Lilibet is named for her great-grandmother, who Harry was very close to. Upon Elizabeth's death and then-Prince Charles's ascension to the throne, Archie and Lilibet officially gained titles of prince and princess as grandchildren of the monarch, though it's not clear that the children, who live in the US, will use them. Only Prince Harry is planning to attend his father's coronation in May. After the Queen's death in September, Harry confirmed that she was able to meet Archie and Lilibet before her passing, presumably when Harry and Markle took the children to the UK for the Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.
