Valentine's Day Flashback: Here's My Actual Playlist of Love Songs From 2000
The year is 2000. The girl is me, but I'm 16, and I just have so many feelings. So naturally, I make a sweet mix CD with all my favorite love songs. This is that mix CD. Listen now, and count your lucky stars you're not 16 anymore. Oh, and listen to the Spotify playlist at the end (you don't even need Napster).
"How's It Going to Be" by Third Eye Blind
Oh, God. I was 13 when this song came out, and I fully remember it speaking to me in my angsty "my crush doesn't know I exist" junior high years.
"Unforgivable" by Plumb
Plumb was the conservative Christian answer to Fiona Apple (even down to the fruit-related names), but edgy enough to appeal to my burgeoning teen rebel. I mean, what 13-year-old girl can't relate to the lyrics: "I'm never told that I am pretty/I'm never told that I am kind."
"Babylon" by David Gray
This song was perfect for looking out into the distance, thinking deep thoughts about love and longing. Or you know, for doing homework.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something
I mean, at 15, I'd never been in a relationship, so I'm pretty sure these lyrics went right over my head. But it's catchy!
"Take a Picture" by Filter
Is this a love song? Maybe not. But it felt nostalgic to me at the time — like, it reminded me of the crushes I'd be saying goodbye to when they'd graduate. (I was single for a long time, OK?)
"Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" by Fuel
Because it's all very dramatic. Cue feelings!
"Black Balloon" by Goo Goo Dolls
Hello, dramatic music that makes you feel things — perfect for my teen self looking for that guy who would finally "get" me. "A thousand other boys could never reach you/How could I have been the one."
"Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls
Let's be honest, this 100 percent had to do with City of Angels. With this song, you get a movie montage, sobbing, and dreams of a guy who would literally give up his immortality for you. Is that too much to ask?
"Yellow" by Coldplay
This is the first music video I remember watching and loving. And you know what? I can't even make fun of it. It's a damn good love song. Even more impressive? Coldplay is still totally relevant.
"Run" by Collective Soul
Also, probably not a love song? But hey, it's emotional and definitely works as a soundtrack for thinking deep thoughts about that cute boy who sits in front of you in Spanish class.
"Again" by Lenny Kravitz
Remember when graduation (or even the end of a school year) felt like the most dramatic farewell ever?! "I wonder if I'll ever see you again." Goodbye forever . . . or at least until next weekend when we all hang out because we still live with our parents and we're like 10 minutes away. Yeah, this song captured that.
"If You're Gone" by Matchbox Twenty
OK, we get it. Letting go of a crush is hard. "I bet you're hard to get over/I bet the room just won't shine."
"Deep Inside of You" by Third Eye Blind
Wait, is this a dirty song? That title DEFINITELY went over my innocent 15-year-old head. Anyway, sad song about feeling alone by pop-rock band? Yeah, I was into it.
