5 Things From Game of Thrones' Premiere That Will Impact the Whole Season

Game of Thrones just threw out a ton of game changers. (Boom.) The season five premiere episode is no "Red Wedding," but there are plenty of moments that will have a big impact on the season as a whole. Throats are slashed, and arrows are shot, but some of the most important parts of the premiere are more subtle details. We got a sneak peek at the first four episodes of the season, and we won't reveal any major spoilers, but we will point out the moments that are about to matter when it comes to the upcoming plots. Take a look below, then dissect a ton of pictures from season five.

01
Tyrion emerges in Pentos.
HBO

Tyrion emerges in Pentos.

Tyrion has been on a boat for way too long — trapped in a crate. He finally lands all the way across the Narrow Sea in Pentos, which is on a different continent than King's Landing. Lord Varys has been looking after him, and there's a hint that he might be aligned with Daenerys!

02
The Sons of the Harpy strike hard and fast.
HBO

The Sons of the Harpy strike hard and fast.

Daenerys is making a lot of enemies. Despite her noble intentions, her moves to free the slaves in Meereen aggravate the owners, who are now fighting back. They've formed a terrorist group called the Sons of the Harpy. The bloodiest scene from the premiere features a member of the Unsullied going to a prostitute to cuddle (remember, they're all castrated) and instead gets his throat cut.

03
Lancel returns as a "Sparrow."
HBO

Lancel returns as a "Sparrow."

Remember Cersei and Jaime's cousin Lancel? The one Cersei used to sleep with? He's back and he cut off his beautiful long hair. He's now a member of the Sparrows, a sect that came out of the Faith of the Seven. He piously tells Cersei that he's turned his life around and become religious, but she's typically skeptical.

04
Littlefinger and Sansa leave the Eyrie.
HBO

Littlefinger and Sansa leave the Eyrie.

The Eyrie is dark and gross, so thank goodness Sansa gets to leave. They drop Robin off (good riddance to that little weirdo) and head out on their own journey. Sansa is officially aligned with Littlefinger at this point, but can she trust him? There's no doubt that Littlefinger has feelings for her, but he always seems to have some tricks up his sleeve that leave you wondering about his motivations.

05
Jon Snow defies Stannis.
HBO

Jon Snow defies Stannis.

Now that Stannis is at the Wall with his troops, there's some awkward tension in the air. Stannis elects to burn Mance Rayder alive for his refusal to acknowledge him as the true king, but before he perishes horribly, Jon shoots him in the heart with an arrow. Granting Mance a quick death does two things: first, it establishes a mistrust between Jon and Stannis, who isn't used to being disobeyed. Second, it proves to the members of the Night's Watch that Jon thinks for himself and isn't afraid to take charge.
