Mindy Kaling Has a New Show Coming to Netflix, and It Sounds Absolutely Perfect

I think Netflix is intentionally trying to give me a heart attack today. Not only did the streaming platform release the season three trailer for Stranger Things (as well as some clue-filled photos from the sci-fi show), but it's also been announced that rom-com queen and all-around genius Mindy Kaling is developing a brand-new Netflix series. Unsurprisingly, the synopsis couldn't be more perfect.

In a tweet from Netflix's See What's Next account, the company wrote, "Netflix has ordered a coming-of-age series from @mindykaling about the complicated life of a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl, inspired by Kaling's own childhood. The 10-ep series is co-created by Kaling & @loulielang, who will also serve as co-showrunners."

Both Kaling and writer Lang Fisher will executive produce along with Howard Klein and David Miner, and the series will fall under Kaling's overall deal at Universal Television. "Netflix approached me about doing a series on young Mindy," she told Variety in a January interview. "I wasn't as interested in telling a period piece about an Indian girl growing up in the '80s, but I told them I'd love to do a show about a 15 year old Indian girl now."

Kaling previously worked with Fisher on her romantic comedy series The Mindy Project, which ran on Fox before getting picked up by Hulu. More specific details about the plot and casting are still very much under wraps, but we can't wait to find out if Kaling herself will appear on screen in any capacity.
