The Office's Phyllis Smith Has a Pretty Heartbreaking Story From the Show's Ending

It's been over two years since The Office ended, but we're still a little sad about it — and so is Phyllis Smith. We caught up with her at a press day for Inside Out's Nov. 3 DVD release, and we couldn't help ourselves: we had to ask about The Office. Smith was very forthcoming about how upset everyone was when Steve Carell exited the show in 2011: "When he left, we cried for a month prior to his leaving. The hair and makeup people were like, 'Don't even start,' because we would start talking about it and we would mess up our makeup. It was really sad when he left." We feel your pain, Phyllis. As heartbroken as the cast must have been when Carell left, it was even worse when the show ended for good:

"Depending on Steve Carell's movie schedule, we'd always come back in July or August [to film]. When we stopped the show, it was the beginning of March, and it was very sad when we were leaving, but it also felt very familiar, like we were just going on hiatus. It wasn't until July and August that we were like, OK, now what? There was this real hole. It was really sad when reality struck."

BRB, crying for Jim Halpert.
