Shay Mitchell Says "No One Is Safe" in the New Season of Pretty Little Liars

We're surging ahead into the seventh season of Pretty Little Liars, and we've got a lot of questions that need answers. In hopes of getting exactly that, we recently visited the set of the TV show to interview a bunch of cast members. One of our more memorable chats was with Shay Mitchell, who had quite a lot to say about Emily Fields's love life, the mysterious "A.D.," and how she wants the show to end.

POPSUGAR: Can you walk me through where we're kicking off this season?
Shay Mitchell: Right out the gate, I think with all the girls it's kind of like . . . "What do we do, where are we going?" . . . So, I think with all of them it's sort of like, "OK, can we wrap this up so we can get back to our normal lives?" You know, but that's not the case. So, I think it's kind of just having to go along with the motions and keep it moving while trying to get to the bottom of it.

PS: This has been teased as the most romantic season yet. But Emily hasn't really —
SM: Where the hell is her romance?!

PS: That's what I want to know! Can you give me any idea of what's in store?
SM: I honestly don't have any idea what's in store . . . I've heard rumors of things, but you never know. I don't know if I ever even trust the writers sometimes. I'm like, you change your mind last minute and bring in somebody else!

PS: If Emily does end up finding love this season, do you hope it traces back to her roots in Rosewood? Or do you hope it's someone new?
SM: I think it could be either or. I think that's like, "Such is life." I think it would be cute to marry your high school sweetheart, but I think it would also be nice to be sitting on a plane with somebody who lives across the world from you. So, I don't know, I think either story could work out, as long as her heart's in it.

PS: We're in an interesting position as audience members, because we know about Dr. Rollins and Mary Drake, but no one else really does. What's it like for the girls to finally get in on that secret?
SM: I think it's sort of a crazy realization. Like, "OK, they're working together? . . . How closely? Who do we trust? Could they be working together for the benefit of people?" We don't know. I think the girls, for the most part, hope that Dr. Rollins is there to be a doctor and be a good husband.

PS: Especially when Alison is the one under his care.
SM: Exactly.

PS: Do you have any hopes for Alison and Emily rekindling things?
SM: I know that's what people want. That would be awesome, but she's married. That's kind of a problem.

PS: Well, she's married to someone who's about to break her heart.
SM: It's one of those things where, yeah, it could be good. It could be a cool nice ending, or the writers could totally do something that's unexpected.

PS: For sure. What can you tell me about "Uber A"?
SM: Not one to mess with. Yeah, that's basically it.

PS: I'll take it.
SM: The uber-est of all.

PS: And obviously, we're looking forward to finding out who that is. What else are you excited to answer for fans this season?
SM: I'm excited to answer all their questions. I'm excited to see who's good and who's bad . . . I think, with this season, it'll honestly be the one where you get the answers.

PS: I think that's one of the most intriguing parts of the show. You never really know who's good and who's bad. Some of the people we've trusted the most have betrayed that trust.
SM: Even Mona! It's like, come on! You never even know. I think Emily will always look at her with a side-eye. So, it's kind of one of those things.

PS: Do you think there's a chance that we should be looking at Emily with a side-eye?
SM: I think you should be looking at all the girls with a side-eye to be honest. No one's safe.

PS: Absolutely not. Who do you think is especially suspicious right now? Aside from the people we know are suspicious, of course.
SM: I think it could be somebody that's unexpected. Where's Lucas at? Hello?! Where's Arya's little brother [Mike] at?

PS: That's what I want to know. For SURE.
SM: My God. Where has he been?

PS: He's busy being a werewolf, I guess. Or something.
SM: Chad Lowe. He looks very suspicious.

PS: How do you hope Emily walks out of all this carnage? Where do you hope she ends up at the end of the show?
SM: I hope they can wrap all this up with a really nice bow. I know the other girls are like, "We want somebody dead."

PS: But you want the bow.
SM: Yeah, put a bow on it! Let's have a happily ever after. Let's walk into the sunset . . . Hopefully, with one of the couples. Fine, kill everybody else. Just have one couple walk into the sunset like, "We did it."

PS: So you want at least one happy ending.
SM: I think there could be a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," or a "Mrs. and Mrs. Smith," or somebody that just walks into the sunset like "Booya."

PS: And you're hoping that Emily is that person? Maybe?
SM: Yeah. With my Mrs.
