All Our Questions After Episode 1 of Disney+'s "Moon Knight"

Disney+'s newest Marvel series, "Moon Knight," debuted on March 30. Unlike the other Marvel shows that have already aired on the streamer, "Moon Knight" introduces a completely new cast of characters, and so far it has no connection to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cast and crew — which includes Oscar Isaac as the title hero and Ethan Hawke as the mysterious Arthur Harrow — do a good job of quickly establishing this new scenario, but we still have some lingering questions.

"Moon Knight" stars Isaac as Steven Grant, a museum gift shop employee who just wants to live a simple, quiet life. But when he falls asleep, a different one of his personalities comes out: Marc Spector, who's entangled in a close relationship with Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon and vengeance. Here are all the questions we have after watching the first episode.

How does Steven Grant know so much about ancient Egyptian culture?
Marvel

How does Steven Grant know so much about ancient Egyptian culture?

Steven works in the gift shop at the National Art Gallery of London, but he wants to become a full-fledged tour guide. He obviously knows a lot about ancient Egyptian culture and mythology. Where he acquired all that knowledge is unexplained so far.

Who are Ammit and Arthur Harrow?
Marvel

Who are Ammit and Arthur Harrow?

When we meet Harrow in episode one, he's located in a remote European village where the people worship him. He says he serves the goddess Ammit and judges others in her name using his magical scales tattoo. If the tattoo judges someone as bad, they spontaneously drop dead.

Harrow later tells Steven that Ammit is tired of waiting for people to do something bad to judge them, and she wanted to get rid of people before they committed crimes. Harrow says Ammit would have stopped dictators from rising and genocide from happening. Harrow says she was betrayed by "indolent fellow gods" and her own avatar. How Harrow found out about Ammit and ended up on the road to try to free her hasn't been explained yet.

In the real world, Ammit was a beast in Egyptian mythology who's associated with the end of the world. If someone's heart did not balance the scales of truth, she devoured them.

Who is Khonshu?
Marvel

Who is Khonshu?

Steven is disturbed to hear a loud, overbearing voice in his head. It's the Egyptian god Khonshu, and Steven's not sure exactly how he's gotten there. What's Khonshu's relationship to Steven and Marc? Will Khonshu be able to stop Ammit and Harrow?

What's the Ennead in "Moon Knight"?
Marvel

What's the Ennead in "Moon Knight"?

The Ennead is the name for the nine major deities in Egyptian mythology. Traditionally, they're Atum, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys, but it's possible the Marvel universe uses different ones.

At the start of the episode, Steven points out to his boss Donna (Lucy Thackeray) that the banners the museum made to promote the Egyptian exhibits only have seven gods, when there should be nine. In the course of the episode, we meet Khonshu — Moon Knight's patron — and hear references to Ammit. Could they be the two cut out from the Ennead? Will we see other members of the Ennead down the line?

What does the scarab do?
Marvel

What does the scarab do?

In episode one, Harrow asks Steven to return a scarab to him. Steven, looking to get out of trouble, wants to do it, but the voice of Khonshu urges him not to, and his fingers literally won't unfurl to hand it over. Later, Harrow says the scarab belongs to Ammit, but doesn't explain what that means. It's not clear why the scarab is so important to what Harrow is planning, or how Marc/Steven got his hands on it to begin with.

Who is Layla?
Marvel

Who is Layla?

During the "Moon Knight" premiere, Steven finds a flip phone in his apartment. The majority of phone calls on it are to someone named Layla, though there's one call to someone named Duchamp. As soon as Steven turns the phone on, Layla calls and tells him he's been missing for months and that she thought he was dead. When he speaks, she asks about his accent and calls him Marc, which is the first time he hears the name. Marc reveals himself to Steven soon after. Layla and Marc's former relationship is still unclear, though Layla (May Calamawy) will probably show up on screen soon.

Where does the Moon Knight suit come from?
Marvel

Where does the Moon Knight suit come from?

At the end of the episode, Steven finally lets Marc take over to get them out of danger. When the camera cuts back to him, Marc is wearing the iconic Moon Knight suit. It's a mystery as to where it came from.

What happened to Marc Spector?
Marvel

What happened to Marc Spector?

Marc/Steven is suffering from dissociative identity disorder (DID), which is usually a response to trauma. What happened to him to make this happen? And does he have other personalities he doesn't know about yet?

What is Steven's accent?
Marvel

What is Steven's accent?

Steven's accent is best described as kind of, sort of British. It's a little bit jarring when you first watch, and Layla even comments on how weird it is. But Oscar Isaac swears he used the strange inflection on purpose.

"That voice is about where Steven's from, where he's living now, and some of his believed heritage," Isaac told "Empire" magazine. "It's not an idea of what Brits actually sound like." He said another reason why he did a different accent for Steven was to make the difference between Steven and Marc even more clear.

Who is Steven Grant's mom?
Marvel

Who is Steven Grant's mom?

At the beginning of the first episode, Steven calls his mom as he feeds his fish and heads out to work, but she doesn't answer. He also calls her mid-episode, and they seem to have a conversation, though viewers only hear Steven's side. Because Steven seems to not be a real person, who does Steven think is his mom? Is he actually in contact with this person? And will they show up before the end of the show?
