The Best Picks For the New Female-Driven Ghostbusters Movie

News broke recently that Paul Feig is making a sequel to Ghostbusters, which he's planning on filling with "hilarious women." A troop of female Ghostbusters? This is amazing, especially in a time when so many women as nailing it in the comedy department. While we're sure he has plenty ideas of who he'd like to see in the roles (Bill Murray did, anyway), we have a few suggestions of our own. We've even gone so far as to specificity which role from the original movies each lady could fill. Check out our ideas, and feel free to share your own!

Dr. Peter Venkman
Columbia Pictures

Dr. Peter Venkman

Bill Murray starred as Venkman, arguably the funniest of all the Ghostbusters. On the other hand, he's probably the least equipped to deal with actual ghosts, though he does find time to romance the ladies.

Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy

McCarthy is a given. She's worked with Murray on St. Vincent, so she's already got a leg up in playing the role he originated. Plus, McCarthy has worked with Feig on Bridesmaids and The Heat. Her outlandish comedy style suits the role perfectly; done deal.

Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman

How funny would Silverman be as the slightly aloof, horny, comic relief of the team?

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer

If Silverman is unavailable, Schumer would be just as great. She's not afraid of raunchy humor, and she's working with Feig's frequent collaborator, Judd Apatow, on a movie right now. It's only a matter of time before she lands a role.

Natasha Leggero

Natasha Leggero

Leggero steals the spotlight of any TV show or movie she's in, and that's exactly what Venkman does, too. She's got the same swagger, and she'd be fun to see in a leading role.

Dr. Raymond Stantz
Columbia Pictures

Dr. Raymond Stantz

Dan Aykroyd played Ray as a tough Ghostbuster who's not afraid to get dirty if it means putting another soul in the ghost trap. He's unintentionally funny, and he's great with a particle accelerator.

Kristen Wiig

Kristen Wiig

Our first pick is Kristen Wiig. Again, she's got the Bridemaids connection to Feig, and though she can be outrageously funny, she excels in roles that are more subtle. Ray isn't as out-there as Venkman, but he is funny.

Maya Rudolph

Maya Rudolph

Why not make this just a full-on Bridesmaids reunion? We could see Rudolph fighting off a giant marshmallow man for sure.

Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler

Poehler can lead a show or a movie, but she's also good as the right-hand lady. Ray is like Venkman's wingman, and she and McCarthy would be a knockout one-two punch.

Dr. Egon Spengler
Columbia Pictures

Dr. Egon Spengler

Not only did Harold Ramis cowrite both of the original films, he played Egon, the team's resident brain. Egon has a sense of humor, but he's serious about science.

Tina Fey

Tina Fey

Because we want Fey and Poehler to be together at all times, we would cast Fey as Egon. She has played resourceful, no-nonsense characters before (30 Rock), and we all know how well she can rock a pair of glasses.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling

Kaling plays a semidorky doctor on TV, so why not on the big screen? She's one of comedy's hottest ladies right now, and we can just see her heading up the team. Granted, she would have to trade in the stethoscope for a proton pack.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock

We're been loving seeing Bullock's comedic side come out lately, and what better project to see her reteam with her The Heat costar and director than a new Ghostbusters movie? Plus, have you even seen Love Potion No. 9? Lady knows how to play it geeky.

Winston Zeddemore
Columbia Pictures

Winston Zeddemore

Winston, played by Ernie Hudson in the originals, is the new guy on the team. He doesn't really believe in the supernatural, until he starts witnessing it in person.

Linda Cardellini

Linda Cardellini

Feig served as a writer for Freaks and Geeks, in which Cardellini was the star. She's recently taken forays into drama (Mad Men), but she's so funny. She would be a great choice to fill in Winston's shoes.

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick

Look, if Kendrick can hang with an a capella troupe, she can get along with some Ghostbusters.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone

Then again, Murray himself recommended Stone for a part in the movie, and we're inclined to agree. She's been doing a lot of drama lately, but how fun would it be to see her get back to her comedic roots?

Janine Melnitz
Columbia Pictures

Janine Melnitz

Annie Potts originally portrayed Janine Melnitz, the team's bored secretary.

Jenny Slate

Unless Potts wants to reclaim her role, we require Slate as Janine Melnitz or bust.
