"Yellowjackets" Finally Reveals What Happens to Shauna's Baby

In season one of "Yellowjackets," fans were shocked to learn that Shauna (Sophie Nélisse as a teen and Melanie Lynskey as an adult), while trapped with her teammates in the woods, is pregnant. Before leaving on what was meant to be a trip to nationals, she had sex multiple times with Jeff, the boyfriend of her best friend Jackie (Ella Purnell). In the present day, Jeff (played by Warren Kole as an adult) and Shauna are married and have a teen daughter, Callie (Sarah Desjardins). But Callie was born in 2004, so fans always knew she wasn't the baby Shauna is pregnant with in the woods in 1996. It takes 19 months for the Yellowjackets to be saved, so fans also knew Shauna was no longer pregnant when the rescue finally happened. In episode six, released May 5 on streaming, viewers finally learn the baby's sad fate.

In the episode, Shauna goes into labor in the middle of a blizzard, and the team try to rally to deliver the baby in their small cabin. Even though Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) was the one who taught sexual education at their New Jersey high school, they're all out of their league when it comes to Shauna's labor. Even Misty (Samantha Hanratty as a teen), usually very helpful and willing to dive into gruesome situations, feels immediately out of her depth. "Save our baby," Lottie (Courtney Eaton as a teen) says, which is both motivating and pretty terrifying. The team eventually decide they need to spill blood for the wilderness to save the baby, and they pray for Shauna and her child. Shauna wakes up with everyone happy and the baby in her arms.

But Shauna struggles to breastfeed the baby — definitely impacted by the fact that she's starving — and after falling asleep again, she wakes to find Lottie with the baby and is terrified. She eventually coaxes the baby to eat. But when she wakes again, she hallucinates that all the other girls have eaten the baby. It is a gruesome, dark sight.

And that's when she learns the truth. During labor, she lost a lot of blood and passed out. Everything she thought she experienced after the baby's birth was a dream. They lost the baby and almost lost Shauna. Shauna cries, struggling to accept the truth, and the episode ends.

In the episode's present day, adult Shauna also reflects on the lasting trauma of losing the baby and how it affected her relationship with Callie. Of course, since this is "Yellowjackets," it happens while she's being questioned in regard to Adam's murder by Detective Saracusa (John Reynolds). She says she never wanted to be a mom and that she did it to save her marriage. She says she was motivated by "shame," too. At the same time, she's also trying to get Saracusa to leave Callie alone in the investigation, so while there's probably some truth in her words, at least some of it is an act.

New episodes of "Yellowjackets" premiere on Fridays on streaming and Sundays on Showtime.
