You'll Want to Add Dr. Seuss's Long Lost What Pet Should I Get? to Your Bedtime Reading Routine Tonight

Red book, blue book, old book, new book! Yes, after five months of anticipation, Dr. Seuss's first new book in 25 years, hit bookshelves today — and it's a good one! What Pet Should I Get? ($10) was discovered by Dr. Seuss's widow, Audrey Geisel, back in 2013 when she was cleaning out his office, but it was likely written between 1958 and 1962, and it incorporates many of the traits that made Seuss so popular with children and adults alike.

The book's main characters — Kay and her brother — are straight off the pages of One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Only this time, they're part of an actual story, not just some silly rhyming. And the images! Half of what makes a Dr. Seuss book so appealing is the drawings that accompany the text, and the new book is filled with Ted Geisel's original drawings. His longtime art director at Random House — the only person still at the company that had worked with him before his death — painstakingly colored his images just as he used to do to ensure they had the true Dr. Seuss feel to them.

As the siblings set off to pick out a pet, we're treated to the rhythmic rhymes that Dr. Seuss made famous. They encounter plenty of silly animals on their journey — a dog that shakes hands among them — and are forced to make a decision. Their father told them they could only buy one pet, so they have to narrow it down. What they pick remains a mystery — it's the only disappointing part of the book. Either Dr. Seuss didn't really finish writing it or he wanted his readers — both young and old — to use their imaginations. But Seuss fans will be pleased with the book — it's a definite must have for your bedtime reading collection!
