As someone who grew up experiencing four seasons (and some very cold midwest Winters) each year, if there's one thing I know, it's that all coats and jackets are not created equal. Depending on temperatures and precipitation levels, heavy parkas, teddy coats, and denim jackets each have their own moments to thrive and shine. So if you've ever wondered why you're burning up or chilled to the bone, even when suited up in an extra layer, I'm breaking down the weather circumstances that best fit a variety of trending styles. Keep reading to see my recommendations, plus a variety of options to try from Nordstrom Rack.

For the Coldest Days

It might seem self-explanatory, but your heaviest outerwear pieces should be reserved for days that are truly freezing. We're talking below 32 degrees . . . and beyond. These styles include insulated (and maybe faux fur-lined) Parkas ($30 and up) and Down Puffers ($30 and up) — preferably thigh-to-knee length to keep you extra bundled up. Although you're free to slip into these on warmer days, you might overheat quickly, especially if you're doing a lot of walking or commuting on a city subway.

When It's Chilly-to-Cold

If you'd classify the weather as "chilly" or just plain "cold," that's when it's time to reach for your midweight coats; the ones that may or may not be lined, are easy to layer under, and are often made from fuzzy or wool-blend fabrics. A few prime examples? One, Teddy and Faux Fur Coats ($22 and up). And two, Car Coats ($60 and up). Unlike their thicker and heavier counterparts, these styles are often a little less bulky and come in so many fun colors, silhouettes, and patterns.

When There's a Light Chill

When There's a Light Chill

When it's early Fall or Spring and there's a slight chill in the air, invite your lightweight outerwear pieces to come out and play. These may include Trench Coats ($30 and up) for a totally timeless and put-together look, or Denim Jackets ($20 and up) for that casual-cool factor. They have just enough coverage and substance to take the edge off but won't make you too warm.

For Wet and Rainy Days

Even when it's not a particularly brisk time of the year, a little precipitation can bring out those lower temps. To shield yourself from both the rain and cold, it's always smart to have an Anorak ($45 and up) — a style that goes over your head, instead of zipping up the front — or a more traditional Rain Coat ($20 and up) in your closet. Whether you opt for one with a hood, a longer length, or a vibrant color, any choice is a good one if it means keeping yourself dry.
