Stomach Bug Symptoms and Treatment

What to Do If You Catch a Tummy Bug

There are so many unpleasant procedures (think dentist and ob-gyn visits) that seem like a party when compared to the symptoms of a stomach bug. From stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, to the muscle aches, headaches, and fever, these bugs are just dreadful.

Although the actual vomiting element only lasts a day, but sometimes up to three, a stomach virus can leave you feeling tired, achy, and with digestive and intestinal troubles for up to 10 days after. A stomach bug really wrecks a person, and it can take over a week until you begin to eating your normal diet.

Unfortunately the best thing you can do when downed by a virus is let nature take its course and let your body do what it needs to do. You probably won't feel much like eating, so stick to clear fluids such as water, seltzer, ginger ale, ginger tea, and ice chips. If you do feel like eating a little, stick to bland foods like bread, crackers, broth, or white rice. Avoid dairy products, caffeine, and alcohol, since they'll just aggravate your entire digestive system. Rest as much as you can (between visits to the bathroom), and if you're really feeling awful, taking some Pepto Bismol, Tums, or other over-the-counter stomach-easing remedies may help.

You do need to watch out for dehydration caused by losing too many fluids. Not only will dehydration make you feel worse with symptoms including dizziness, dry mouth, and fatigue, but it could also lead to seizures or permanent brain damage if left untreated. Be sure to drink clear fluids often — even popsicles help. Sip small amounts, so they're more likely to stay down. And just keep in mind that with time, you'll be back to your old self.

Once you experience a stomach virus, you want to do everything in your power to prevent it from happening again. Since these viruses are highly contagious, wash your hands often, especially when you're touching public items such as door handles and elevator buttons. Also, keeping up with your healthy diet and regular exercise routine will strengthen your immune system, so if you come in contact with a bug, your body can fight it off.

It seems that the cause is excesive heat, solar temperature. Since certain microbes live under high temperatures, the stomach receives these summer bug strollers during meals and our bodies release a reaction or defenses act, which may be the reason for sickness. It is temporary and should not be confused with other viruses. During very hot summers, ice cream is one of the causes, because pollution sticks on the ice cream..

Ugh. I have it right now and I feel terrible. I was feeling great yesterday (surprisingly too because it was a Monday) but then the logic started correcting itself. I went to bed with a hurting stomach, so I just sat up while I slept. At around 12 a.m. I kept waking up and new my fate. So I went to my mom's room and got gingerale. My dad told me to sit by the toilet and I did. Within 10 mins I vomitted (ewwww! I hate throwing up). Maybe 25 mins I went back to bed only to keep waking up and threw up all over the place. My ma had to clean it up. Then my cat threw up a little later (poor kitty). I slept on the floor in the hallway because I couldn't stand being in my room @ the time. Got no sleep. Threw up like 5 times more. Even bile. I couldn;t go to school today, which sucks because I had a test. I felt really weak when morning came. I had gatorade last night but threw it up. Taking small sips of water and crushed ice helps. Rest as much as possible. And drink a bunch of water to prevent dehydration. Hang in there reader. It'll end sure enouhg with the right care.

January 3 2013, I got the stomach virus i researched online the symptoms. And all the posted comments helped me. I tried to drink ginger ale and a soft pretzel. But it made it worse:( i vomitted and had diarrhea with stomach cramping). But had a bright ideal to mix SUGAR in WATER just a little not to much that its juice but like a pedialite. i thought about this because when you go to hospital they will give you an IV for hydration. Guess what?? IT WORKED IN 24 HOURS.... hope it works for you.

ive had it too and took a day to clear up and ever since i was a child growing up in africa weve grown to know acoupple of alternatives before running to see the doctor and the fastest remedy is ,warm some water\u00a0 pour it into a glass and add in half a tea spoon of salt and a heaped tea spoon of sugar and stir it up then drink it down u will be suprised withing half an hour the pain will subside tremendously, this washes off waterver is in the tummy and neutralises it.try this out atlest 3 times a day u wount have to repeat the following day it will be so gone.cheers \u00a0

I have it now. I've had it for about a week. Not able to eat anything but crackers. I can't even eat toast or broth like it says. I am always hungry though and am sick since I can't eat. Throwing up almost every morning because I'm so hungry. I'm also having back pains so I can't stay in bed because it hurts. I can't wait to get over this and feel like myself again.

My husband had a nasty stomach bug earlier this year. He actually vomited in his lunch box while driving home. The best thing for him was a sports drink diluted 50% with water. He could barely keep anything down, but small sips of this mixture helped keep him hydrated. I cleaned like a madwoman so I wouldn't get sick too.

Last time I had one I wrapped myself up in my quilt and just sipped water. Staying warm helped me feel heaps better!
