Baby With Tailbone Tumor Is "Born Twice" — Once For Surgery, Once For Real

Sometimes modern medicine is so completely mind blowing. This is especially true in the case of LynLee Hope Boemer — a baby who was "born twice."

At 16 weeks pregnant, Margaret Boemer went for a routine ultrasound when doctors found a tumor growing on LynLee's tailbone. The baby began to grow ill as the tumor deprived her blood supply, and though some doctors suggested that Boemer terminate her pregnancy, doctors at Texas Children's Fetal Center offered to perform emergency fetal surgery on LynLee.

At 23 weeks, they were able to go in and remove 90 percent of the tumor — which had grown to be almost as large as LynLee — place her back inside the womb, and sew Boemer's uterus up to let the baby continue to grow. LynLee was officially born (for the second time) 12 weeks later via C-section, and at eight days old doctors removed the rest of the tumor.
