I get what you are saying.... as a kid my mom, a single mom, always wanted me to be her friend instead of her child. I think kids want rules and limits on their behavior ...it helps them feel secure about themselves and what is expected of them.
People think we are to firm with our kids... have to many expectations yet our kids are happy and very well behaved.

I just wish more people disciplined their kids. Hard or not it is worth it:)

While I get what they're saying in these instances, I never felt bad or had a problem with disciplining my child, because I knew that it would ultimately make him a better person in the future.

OR just tell them that if they ask one more time, they're NOT getting it back. Period. Problem solved.
