Parents were warned throughout the holiday season that one of the toys topping kids' lists this year is the hottest item for more than one reason — they've been known to explode.

Despite stories of hoverboards catching on fire, many children were thrilled to open their new gadget on Christmas morning. But for one New Jersey family, this well-intended present sparked a holiday disaster.

The Lanoka Harbor Fire Department responded to a call after a hoverboard caught on fire while charging and sparked an explosion in the home.

While no injuries were reported in this case, the fire department warns people to take caution with this toy. "Do not leave them unattended, monitor them while charging…. Register them for warranties and check for manufacturer recalls," the department posted on Facebook.

Currently, the federal government is looking into 16 different hoverboard fires in 12 different states, and the US Product Safety Commission says this a priority investigation because so many people received them as holiday gifts.
