Baby Girl Born With a Trunk Is Worshipped as Hindu Elephant God

A baby girl born in India with a trunk-like protrusion between her eyes is being worshipped by locals who believe she is the reincarnation of the Hindu god Ganesha, who has the face of an elephant.

"My sister-in-law gave birth to a girl . . . and her face looks exactly like Lord Ganesha," the baby's aunt Rajani told ANI. "Everybody is saying she is an incarnation of the God. This is why whoever hears about her is coming here to get a glimpse of the baby and are making whatever offerings possible."

The infant was born last week in the northern Indian village of Aligarh, to impoverished parents Om Prakash and Sarvesh, and she has three older siblings.

Although doctors have said the protrusion is most likely due to a gene mutation, caused by malnutrition and pollution, the girl has been nicknamed Lord Ganpatni — meaning "Ganesha's wife" — by visitors who have lined up to bring gifts as they would in front of an idol.
