Mom and Son Make Lunches Every Day For a Boy Who Was Only Eating Fruit Cups

"Mama can you make me TWO lunches today?"

Josette Duran's response to her son Dylan's request for extra lunch was what many moms would likely ask: "Are you not getting full?" As it turns out, Dylan was eating enough for lunch, but a classmate of his who he noticed was eating alone every day was not. "It's for this boy. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch, can you make him lunch too? I don't think he has lunch money."

The way Duran handled her son's request teaches an important lesson in compassion and makes it easy to see that Dylan gets his kind heart from his mama. Without much thought, the New Mexico mom packed two lunches for Dylan so he could give one to his classmate — and did so for weeks.

Eventually Duran was called into her son's principal's office because the boy's mother — who had lost her job and was unable to pay for his lunch — found out Duran was feeding her son. The single mother tried to offer Duran money for her selfless act. "She says, 'I know this isn't much, but I just got a job, and I know you've been feeding my son,'" Duran told KCCI News.

But she couldn't accept the woman's money and explained in a Facebook Live video that her motivation in helping the boy and his single mother wasn't for praise: "This hits home to me because a few years ago, me and my son were homeless. I was living in my car and I was washing him in bathrooms. And we didn't have food."

After hearing what Duran did for her son's classmate, the girls' volleyball team coaches raised over $400 to help pay her back for making all those extra meals, but once again, Duran wouldn't accept the money for herself. Instead, she took it straight to her son's cafeteria and paid off students' lunch debts. "We paid up all the past due accounts for all the kids who need lunch. So now, nobody in that school owes any money, and now everyone can eat."
