When a Hospital Didn't Have a Wheelchair For Her Baby, 1 Mom Made a Version From Pinterest!

At 4 months old, Evelyn Moore was diagnosed with cancer after doctors found a neuroblastoma tumor on her spine. After eight rounds of chemotherapy, Evelyn is now in remission, although her family has since learned that she is permanently paralyzed below the arms. In an interview with CTV News, Evelyn's mother, Kim, described receiving the bad news. She said, "You go home and you cry and you come back the next day and be the strongest mom and dad you can ever be."

Doctors had initially recommended that Evelyn "army crawl" her way around — meaning solely using her arms to pull the rest of her body — and that she would later get a wheelchair. Dissatisfied with that advice, Kim instead did some research and found a DIY baby wheelchair on, of all places, Pinterest.

Evelyn's parents then got to work and built her custom wheelchair using a Bumbo floor seat, kitchen cutting board, and wheels from a children's bike. All in all, it took one night of hard work and $100 to make. In the meantime, they'll save for a larger wheelchair that will likely cost thousands.

Evelyn has learned how to maneuver her chair at a remarkable rate. Kim said, "She went backwards first, and then she went forwards, and then she figured out how to turn." Adding, "Now we have a speed bump in the middle of our living room because she just goes that fast."
