Photo Series Turns NICU Babies Into Astronauts, Olympians, and More

From the moment our children are born (and sometimes even before then), we dream of what they will be like in 10, 20, even 30 years. But NICU parents aren't afforded that luxury, as they are more worried about whether their child will make it through the night. Thanks to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, parents of preemies have a little more hope for the future. In the hospital's latest Safe Sleep campaign, photos show NICU patients exploring space, winning the Olympics, dancing through life, and so much more. According to CHOA's PR coordinator Chrissie Gallentine, the images are meant to "convey the importance of creating a safe sleep environment so that babies can grow up to be all they are dreaming about."

"We wanted the photos to help educate parents about the need for babies to sleep alone, on their backs, and in a crib," Gallentine says. "We also wanted the photo series to show that our NICU babies are poised to make a big impact on the world." And they truly have. In the month since the photos were released, thousands have learned about safe sleep and preventing sudden infant death syndrome. In addition to raising awareness, the series raises hope for the parents whose children were involved and others who may find themselves in a similar situation.

"I cried tears of joy when I saw the photo," says Michele Forth, whose daughter Madilyn was transformed into a doctor. "We were so proud that it featured our shining star. She has overcome so many obstacles and is truly a fighter."
