Teacher Hands Out Offensive Award to Special-Needs Student

Receiving a school award is a celebratory moment in a child's life, but for a group of special-needs students, the awards they received were downright offensive. Two teachers at Sulphur Springs Middle School in Dallas handed out what they called "8th Annual Ghetto Classroom Awards," and that wasn't even the worst part. Debra Jose, the grandmother of a 14-year-old student with learning disabilities, was shocked to learn he received the "huh? award."

She told CBS News: "Tears just started falling out of my eyes. I was like, 'What did they just do to him again?'"

The school administration responded that they didn't know about the awards and that the teacher who signed the awards brought the practice from her previous teaching position. "I just want them to help him," Debra said. "Don't insult him."
