Why You Should Think About Baby #2 When Registering For Baby #1

Half the fun (and stress!) of being pregnant the first time is registering for your unborn bundle of joy. There are adorable outfits, infinite cute blanket options, and plenty of practical gadgets to choose from. It might seem odd to think about a second child before your first one even arrives, but if you consider the future of your family when registering, you'll save money and time the second go around.

Stroller

If you (or someone else) will be spending big bucks on a stroller, you should consider the conversion options. Can you add a rumble seat or even a piggy board? Can you configure it so that two little ones can ride in a reclined position at the same time? While strollers that convert are often larger and much more expensive than singles, investing in one that will go beyond your first child is not only smart but will also save you the headache of figuring out how to transport both children once the second is on the way. Alternately, you might want to pick a less expensive single stroller since you can bet newer, more innovative double stroller options will be on the market by the time you have another.

Bumbo

This plastic seat has become a staple at baby showers since it first hit the market. The bright color options and practicality make it a great gift. Even if you think you can skip the molded Bumbo chair, it's good to have around. With the table attachment, it can be used instead of a high chair, which is especially helpful if your first child is still using theirs by the time the baby comes. Who has room for two high chairs, anyway?

Breast Pump

If you have any intention of pumping, and especially if you'll be going back to work or traveling, invest in the best, most portable pump you can afford. The Medela Freestyle is amazing for moms on the go since its small size and battery pack allow for easy transportation. It'll be worth it no matter how many kids you plan on having, but you'll be even more thankful to have a lightweight, portable option on your second or third round. Don't forget your insurance company is now required under the Affordable Care Act to help cover the cost of a breast pump!

Clothes

All the warnings are true . . . many of your baby's best outfits will inevitably be ruined by blowouts, spit-up, or milk spills. Don't break the bank when it comes to basics. Instead, register for reasonably priced six-packs of onesies since you'll be buying them all over again when the second one arrives. Even if you think you've managed to keep them fresh, you might notice yellow marks have developed around the collar as you pull them out of storage.

Baby Swing

When you only have one, your arms are mostly free for rocking and soothing as needed. But when there are other kids in the picture, you'll want a safe place to set your baby down that can also buy you a few extra minutes. This is where the often high price of a baby seat with all the bells and whistles is worth the investment. Choose a rocking, vibrating, or swinging option with the idea that it'll save your sanity when you have a second and you'll get the added bonus of additional entertainment for baby number one. Many moms swear by the 4moms mamaRoo.

Blankets and Bedding

Not that baby girls can't be decked out in blue, but it's worth thinking about the patterns and colors that you choose for baby number one. Many well-wishers will go the traditional color route once they find out what you're having, but if you're going to register for blankets, burp cloths, and bedding, you might consider more neutral hues so you can use these items again even if you end up with a child of the opposite sex next.

Seasonal Gear

It's possible that your first and any future children will be born at the exact same time of year, but not 100 percent likely. Don't go wild on strictly seasonal gear like swimwear or snowsuits since they won't be useful unless the weather is just right when they fit your future child/ren.
